My brother asked that I post this:
i am having a problem installing firmware update 5.1.4.
problem:
1. i d/led the firmware update from the apple website. i run the installer.
2. the installer.app proceeds to successfully install all the need files.
3. when i click on the pop menu from the G5 Firmware.app i get this message:
The Power Mac G5 Firmware Updater 5.1.4 needs to be copied to the /Applications/Utilities directory, but a version already exists. Choose OK to replace with this version, or Cancel to cancel the update.
4. i choose okay and get this message:
An error has occurred. Your Firmware will not be updated. Error 11.
analysis:
for some reason the install application copies the G5 firmware app to my /applications/utilities directory, runs it, then tries to overwrite itself, but can’t.
attempted solution:
I tried a couple things to help my brother out. First, repaired all permissions on the disk. The error still occurred. Second, I suggested he go in with the Terminal and check the permissions on the file that was being copied into /Applications/Utilities. The owner is root and I thought that may pose a problem so I suggested that before hitting the Okay button, he sudo chown the file to himself first. No luck. Oh, and there is no exisiting G5 Firmware Update app in his Utilities folder until he runs the application and when it dies with the error, the app disappears.
So... we're both stumped. Does anyone have any idea what could be happening?
