The Apple store just started a sale of up to $700 off RAM with any new Power Mac purchased through the end of March. They will certainly not want to discount RAM when the new ones come out.

I think 2.5 will be out then. This leaves 3.0 for the latter summer time period 5 or 6 months later.

Apple ram is sick expensive. It's one area they can cut, still make plenty of profit and look like they are having a sale.

I think it's just a scheme to get any sales they can since anticipation for a new G5 is heating up and most of the buyers that planned to get one, have done so.

osxisfun is right - Apple has frequently started offering new machines before deals have ended, usually to spur initial sales of the new models (or different Mac lineups that aren't quite at the end of their lifetime yet).

I should note that there's an offer ending on Feb. 28th, so don't be surprised if you see new G5s on March 2nd.

[The Apple Stores] account for one out of every seven dollars of the company's overall revenue.

Apple RAM must account for the second buck.

There is always a caveat in the small print of all Apple offers that they can be withdrawn at any time...

It has happened before, I'm sure it will happen again.

Calling any of the G5 line a "piece of junk" seems a bit off. Although everyone is all hyped up for 3Ghz G5s, a Dual 2.4Ghz G5 will do just fine.

Oh well, I'm not going to buy a Power Mac until end of Oct. anyways. Just in time for the new dual 3.0+ Ghz and Mac OS X 10.4 with 30 inch display

Can't wait till Oct.!

We're starting to see a bunch of rebates and discounts on the G5 which only means the update is just around the corner. MacMall currently has up to $200 off the purchase of a G5 and Cinema Display. This kind of deal means that there trying to get rid of stock. The big question is will we be able to get a dual 2.0 for $1999 when the new models are released? Unless there are any other improvements I'd say that that's the best bet.

Question is...at this point, is there any (more) speculation of what the "new" G5 will have - other than another 500 MHz?

Significant bug fixes? Slight design mod? New Keyboard / Mouse? ANyone, Bueller, Bueller???

I'm curious -- does anyone here follow the Wintel PC market closely enough to know how often Dell et al revise their lineup? Do you see speedbumped PCs every month, two months, three months, six months, what? Just wondering whether we're all justified in our impatience that the 2.0 GHz has been the fastest in the lineup for what, six months now?

There was discussion at Ars about some spiffy new ATI graphics cards due in March or April, and the possibility that the G5 bump is waiting on them.

All the time. Seriously, Dell has released 2 ENTIRELY NEW Laptops (not just speed bumps, I mean entire laptops (think iBook, PowerBook, etc.) in the past TWO WEEKS! Wintels get upgrades all the time, and it's awesome. Apple should really lean towards upgrading more than like twice a year.

Perhaps they are waiting on PCI Express too? But that would require modification to the motherboard.

It would make the new machines more than just a speed bump though (and worth the wait). The longer it takes to release the update, the higher my expectations.

If Link's ass says 2.2 GHz then I'm confident of 3 GHz. It'll probably fall between as has been pointed out. 2.5 GHz - heck they went from 130 nm to 90 nm and that does make it much easier to make faster processors.

AI is up with another set of rumors. Has to do with ATI and the 9800XT being the slowdown of the PowerMac RevB.

http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=381

Looks like it is all coming together (according to the rumors). Updated G5, video card and cinema displays! Yeah..
