From today's MacRumors (that's MacRumors, NOT MOSR):
"Meanwhile, according to an unverified MacRumors source, the PowerMac G5 delays are reportedly related to difficulties with cooling in the faster machines.
While no specifics are available, one would assume that Apple will be using the new PowerPC 970FX in upcoming PowerMac revisions. The 90nm chip should run cooler than its 130nm counterpart."
As I understand it, the 90 at 2.5GHz is cooler than the 130 at 2 GHz. At 3 GHz, though, it would be somewhat hotter.
Granted, it's an "unverified source," but it makes sense. Steve said "3 GHz within a year" last June. He'd look pretty silly if he couldn't deliver. The design of the new cooling system should be very interesting. Any guesses what'll be in there?

I'm a little skeptical about 3GHz this early. But then again, I don't think anybody thought that the G5 was going to come out at 2GHz last summer. Pre-WWDC speculation was 1.8GHz or less. So, IBM has demonstrated that they are capable of exceeding their own goals/roadmaps.
If we see 3GHz, kick ass I say. I still won't be able to afford one though.

I think that's a legitimate prediction. B/c the G5s didn't get released until October, so Steve still has some time to make good on his prediction.

If it is 2.5 at end of April that means Apple has 5 months to put out an update to 3.0GHz(end of summer = end of September we already know from Apple promises). No way would they have an update that fast (after going 9 months, to turn around and update in 5?). If there is no G5 update in March, then the next update will be 3.0. Probably anounced mid April with a shipping time of 6 weeks for the top end (so the 3.0 wont ship until June).

Not sure where you live, but I was able to go to my local Apple store and pick one up at the end of August. They were anounced in June, and were shipping in August.

Too little, too late. I just checked out Jobs' keynote last June. He said (direct quote) "IBM and Apple are today announcing that we'll be at 3 GHz within 12 months." He probably knew a bit more than most of the people on this forum. Wouldn't you surmise that he's got the chips in hand right now and Apple's finishing up the case design? That's why I feel this rumor is worth paying more attention to than most.

I'd be very surprised if a 3 GHz showed up in shipping Power Macs before August.

There has been nothing about G5s running at 3GHz on the 90nm fabs. With the cooling capacity of the current design, I can't imagine the problem.... Those heat sinks are HUGE!

I heard the exact same thing and thought it was odd that the rumor sites predicted 3.0GHz by the end of the year instead of 3.0GHz at WWDC 2004, since that's what Mr. Jobs said.

I'll echo what PM Man said. The speculation before the G5 even came out was 1.8 or less. I wouldn't be surprised, really, if they whacked us upside the heads with a dual 3 as the next update. Could you imagine? 2, dual 2.5, and dual 3? And then 15"/17" 1.6 G5 iMac, and 1.8 17" and 20" iMac G5. Yes, these are my dreams for Apple's line.

3Ghz in one year is 3Ghz in one year! He will announce them at WWDC this year along with the G5 PB. Well maybe G5 PB sooner and the iMac 3 even sooner then that. Steve wants to beat Intel not only in performance but also in numbers. If they can get a faster CPU in Ghz, then Joe Blow who only cares about Ghz will be more likely to buy Apple then Dell. Now if they could get the prices down about 5-10%...

The Powerbook G5 will come out before (and not at the same time as) the iMac G5. The Powerbook is a pro model. The iMac is a consumer model. The Pro line will have it before the consumer line. Think about the G3 and the G4 (G4 is a better example). The G4 worked in the TiBook, so of course they could cool it in an iMac... but why?

Apple has a couple of deals running through the end of March. Could we possibly hear an announcement around this time? A 3 ghz dual G5 would be a towering achivement and I would think hands down beat any windows based system in pure performance...at least until they are actually delivered.

I forget when it was, but recently Jobs changed it to "end of summer". Which we all know by Apples definition is end of September.

I disagree with this, I have seen this comment before. They are different not only as one is a consumer model and the other a pro machine, but one is a laptop and the other a desktop. It does not matter if the iMac gets a G5 now and the PowerBook does not, if you need a laptop an iMac will not do, it's that simple. There is nothing in the universe that says it must be so. Pros buying a pro machine more likely than not know the difficulty in getting a G5 in a PowerBook, for those consumers that would hem and haw about it, those people do not make up a substantial portion of PowerBook sales. People that need a laptop will get a laptop regardless.

It is a solid prediction - the G5s are rumored for release late this month. Even so I am keeping my fingers crossed for a 3 GHz as I will be buying a machine this fall.

How can you say this? Dual 3Ghz is going to be way faster then any windows machine...

So (hypothetically and all that), how sweet would it be from a marketing standpoint to get the dual 3's out at the same time the 30" hdcd comes out? Be a nice setup, and they' d prolly sell pretty well.
Well, that's my pipe dream. Want a dual 3, want a 30" hdcd. But you can't get applecare on a display without purchasing a computer (right?). So it's both or neither for me.

I'm betting we see 3GHz G5s announced 12 months from the original G5 release, and shipping somewhat later than that. Another few months should give IBM enough time to tweak the 970fx up a bit higher.
