I'm looking at the Apple online store and thinking about buying my first Mac. I'm a graphic/web designer, so a quality display ranks highly in my book. The price of the iMac with a 20" screen is pretty impressive - how does the screen quality compare to a 17" PowerBook or a 17" Cinema display? As far as I can tell, it's a two hour drive to the nearest Apple store...I don't know anyplace nearby that carries Apple products where I could do my own comparisons.

Are there any other graphics folks out there using the iMac over a Power Mac or a PowerBook? I don't need intensive video editing power...just enough juice to be quick with Macromedia products & Photoshop...so it looks like an iMac would do me. Also on my list is a PowerBook (either 15" or 17") - how would these compare against eachother? Thanks!

From Apple's website, the 20" iMac comes with the view angle of vertical 170 and horizonal 170, contrast is 350:1 while brightness is 230 cd/m2, these specs. looks exactly the same as 20" Cinema diaplay. So, it should be much better than 17" iMac, actually the diaplay of 17"iMac is not very good, it looks wash-out.

Can anyone comment with any certainty if the display on the 20" iMac is actually the same thing as the 20" Apple Cinema?

I have seen side by side the two (i.e. 20" Apple Cinema, 20" iMac). I cannot detect any difference. I have not very good eyes though. If this is of critical importance to you, I would suggest to try to check out for yourself in an Apple Store or dealer, if possible.

The 20" cinema's LCD is the same, yes.

If you're going for a regular (non wide) display, go for something NEC or samsung. Otherwise the 20" and 23" are pretty decent deals for what they are..

Otherwise I'd suggest the samsung 172t or 173t
Aloha
