I have the new G5 1.8DP. I want to duplicate my HD from the machine I am replacing, a 500 AGP G4. I do not want to reinstall all my programs and reset all my settings from scratch.

Boot the new machine in Firewire target disk mode, connect the machines with a Firewire cord, and use Carbon Copy Cloner on your G4 to copy your system on to the new drive. You can first reformat the new machine if you want to, but make sure the OS on your old machine is recent enough for the G5. (Needs to be 10.2.7 or later, I think)
Edit: If you don't want to wipe the OS on the new box, you can copy just the Apps and Users directories this way, but first you have to set up users on the new machine with the EXACT same usernames and passwords.

Thanks Chris.
How do I get the new G5 to start up in Firewire mode once I connect the two computers together with the cable?

It's also probably a good idea to set up the users on the new machine in the same order as the old machine, so that user IDs match.

I had to do exactly this quite recently. What I did, just to be sure, was an Archive and Install from the G5 system disk over the old (cloned) system. Just in case there was any G4-specific stuff lurking in there.
Everything has worked pretty much perfectly since…
