Nice buy. It's hurting for ram though. Feed it and she'll run nicely.

Congratulations!

You may not have a G5, but you've got a machine that is the last in it's generation and that has pretty much every single bug and 'kink' worked out. Quite nice.

The G4 still has a lot of life in it, and they run Panther fantastically, as I'm sure you've noticed . I intend to keep my G4 for quite a while longer.

My mom and I bought have a PowerMac G4 MDD
  • Dual 1.25GHZ
  • 768MB RAM (Kingston Valueram)
  • 160GB SeaGate
  • 4xSuperDrive
  • ComboDrive (Mine is Toshiba, not sure her brand doesn't say)
  • ATI Radeon 9000 64MB

Fast. But now I feel they are slow (app launching etc) is something wrong with me? Her Mac has to last until late 2007. and Mine 2006. I also have a Maxtor 120GB from my Beige G3 (slave drive that brought it to it's knees and forced me to get a new Mac). It's used as my OS Apps and Data Drive. 160GB is my scratch drive.

Well I will say with almost 100% certanty that the machien will last. I still have a beige 233 G3 running, and its been 6-7 years.

But I am guessing you are asking if it will remain useable in terms of speed. Well, if it "feels" fast now, if you keep the same kinds of apps, it will feel fast 2-3 years from now. I have an 867MHz G4 tower I got when they were released (2 and a half years ago I believe). It is still very useable for me. I do a bit of editing work (final cut express or imovie depending), internet, typing papers, coding (for classes and other projects), encoding video, etc. You guys got duals, and I am guessing your Mom wont be doing as much as I am, so I bet her mahcine can easiler last her until 2007, if not longer.

I do plan on upgrading to a mid range G5 at the end of this summer, mainly because it will help me do encoding and compiling faster, and the machine is much quieter.

Brand new, they're $1299 from Apple, which includes an 80 GB hard drive, Radeon 9000, 256 MB of RAM, and a Combo drive.

I have the exact same machine and it runs everything that I throw at it like a champ. Great machine. Must say the case grew on me as well. It's nice to be able to have 2 optical drives.

I've had one of those since the end of last summer. It has been rock solid, not a single problem in any regard. I have 768MB of ram, don't do video editing and am not a professional photographer (though am an amateur one), the PM does everything plenty fast for my needs. The best thing is the stability and trouble free operation! It also looks a lot better than the G5, imho, and the price is oh so nice

Ditto. My bro is still using his G4 upgraded 8600 WITH OS X. I still can't get OS X to install on my G3, though.

I think it might be my HD because I'm on a "new" G3 with a newer revision mobo and everything, but it still won't install.

Congratulations.

Can't beat the price and the design, and the best extensibility a Mac ever had.

(But yes, do yourself the favor and get 512 MB more RAM).
