MacRumors cites French macplus.org: http://www.macminer.com/index.cgi?u=powermac. I'm waiting for this upgrade! Apple, go faster. We will catch up with Intel, yess...

I'll believe it when I see it. I don't think we'll see updates until the current RAM deal expires on March 27th, though. Apple doesn't usually release new hardware in the middle of related special offers.

It's been noted on these boards that Apple often does not wait 'til the end of promos and even ends them early. I would not be surprise if this is done to persuade people sitting on the fence to go ahead and purchase. The suggested speed bumps seem very reasonable. What I am waiting to see is if they will be ready to ship on the announce date or if we will need to wait.

I don't see them stopping at 2.4 GHz. Unless IBM's announcement was more echoing Apple's desires than their own, 2.5 GHz is more likely where it will stop.

The video cards will probably also get a slight bump - especially if the G5s end up using PCI Express.

True or not, what really kills me are the whiners that are saying "2.4GHz - that sucks! We waited this long for that!" "I want 2.5GHz damit!"
This just pisses me off to no end. People are comparing the G5 processor status to the days of Motorola. Gimmie a break. IF TRUE, 400MHz in 6 months is pretty damn good, with plenty of headroom now that the move to 90nm has been made. Has Intel done this? I think no. Motorola sure as hell never did. And multiply that 400MHz times two (dual processors, y'know).

Personally, I think those "specs" are pretty reasonable sounding. Certainly could be true.

Hey, I'd love to pick up a combo drive/modem-less dual 1.8GHz machine for the office for $1393 (education price of a similarly config'd SP1.6). Color me there.

Do we have to see a thread like this every week?

Update: Actually, now that the G5 XServe is delayed, I'm sure any PowerMac update is also delayed. Of course, not knowing when the powermac is supposed to be upgraded means we'll not know for sure if a delay actually occured.

I'll happily take a dual 2.2 for the current price of a dual 1.8! Or even a dual 1.8 with a price cut. No complaints here. What I'd really like to see is the addition of PCI Express, Hypertransport 2.0 and support for 8X superdrives more than speed bumps, honestly. But I'm not gonna wait for them if they aren't out w/ the next update.. Either way, if the rumor's true for 3/23.

Cadaver is right. People underestimate apple for a studid Mhz. As if they would be able to tell the difference between a dual 2.4 or a dual 2.5 Ghz. What I think the most of us want to see are important upgrades like a Powerbook G5 or something new that we are not expecting. I have a G4 Dual 800 and the only think I would upgrade it to is a Powerbook G5 17"...

I was just pointing out that IBM publically announced a 2.5 GHz 970FX chip. Seeing as how the only two customers for it are IBM proper and Apple, it's doubtful that we'll see anything less than 2.5 GHz on the top-end.

Does megahertz matter? Not as much as it does in Intel's world, but it still matters. Any increase can help Apple win the marketing battle.

The specs look reasonable.

As for me, summer is around the corner so I'll just wait for the 3.0 Ghz . Although it probably wont ship until fall.

A DP 2.2Ghz or DP 2.4Ghz G5 sounds fine to me. As soon as they announce it, I'll be buying one.

all i can say is that i'm glad i didn't wait for whatever this upcoming speed-bump that has been on the horizon since january... i got my dual 2.0GHz refurb from Apple on jan. 20 and couldn't be happier (especially since my unit came w/ 2Gb of ram installed for some reason!), i'd be tearing my hair out at this point if i kept fence sitting all these months.

when the dual 3.0GHz units actually surface in the wild then i'll consider selling my current dual to upgrade, definitely not for a dual 2.4/2.5GHz though..
