hello all,

need help please,

just got out my old G4 500 from the store. i just took out the old HD ( 20gb ) and installed a 300GB HD, when i booted from Panther CD Disk Util sees it as 128GB.. why is that ? and what should i dooo ? please dont tell me i wasted money for nothing.... hope to hear from u soon !!!!

The onboard ATA controller on this motherboard cannot recognize drive sizes larger than 128 GB. To get full use of the drive, you need to either install a PCI ATA card that supports large drive sizes, or use a FireWire case that supports larger drive sizes.

You might find a USB drive box that supports large drive sizes, but your G4 has USB 1.1 and accessing a hard drive over USB 1.1 is painfully slow.

Read somewhere that u can partition the HD ? but how when it only sees 127 ? does anyone know how that is done ? thanks

Partitioning does not work around this problem. The motherboard controller simply cannot address more than the first 128GB on the drive. You can partition within that range, but you need newer hardware to see the rest of the drive.
