Just inherited a single 1Ghz MDD G4 and much to my dismay, I can't shut the damn thing down. What's more, half of the Apple Menu doesn't seem to work. About this Mac doesn't do anything usually, or if it does, the rainbow pinwheel comes up indefinitely for whatever app you clicked it from. Same with Restart and Shutdown.

Sleep will usually work, but only after a good minute. And even weirder, control-eject doesn't bring up the Shutdown dialogue box and command-option-escape doesn't do anything at all.

This is all under 10.2.8, recent firmware, stock 256Mbs RAM.. Any ideas?

1. Reinstall a fresh copy of Mac OS.

2. You're gonna want to add more RAM to run OS X comfortably.

Sounds like whoever's been using it is not very good at keeping their Mac happy, organized, and clean. People do a lot of things that screw up computers - they'll install software that messes things up, and whenever something doesn't work they're afraid to change anything for fear of "breaking something," so your best option is probably to just wipe the hard drive completely, and reinstall everything from scratch.
