I ordered it.

Dual 1.8
Radeon 9600
1 gig PC3200 (2x512)
Combo
160 SATA
AE
Bluetooth

2x512 made sense with the memory discount. Easier to sell than 2x256. I'm going to swap in 4x512 of Geil PC3200 so I can put the Apple RAM in my PC or ebay it. I don't like mixing brands of memory in the same machine. I'm concerned about the G5 being finicky about third party RAM, so I can put the OEM back if the Geil stuff doesn't work. And genuine apple memory gets a good price since they overcharge for it direct.

R9600's going to get ebayed and replaced w/ a 9800 pro retail.

Combo drive is being replaced with a Pioneer 107D 8X DVDRW/CDRW.

Ship date is estimated 3/24. If upgrades/price cuts are announced on 3/23 I should be able to talk my way into getting the difference refunded or an upgrade.

When the smoke clears I'll have a dual 1.8 with an 8X superdrive, 2 gigs of RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro.

So, in short.. Woot! G5 for me!

G5...tis a gorgeous thing.

Would be even gorgeous-er with:

> Internal space for a second drive
> A better keyboard (split ala MS, but cooler) & mouse (at least make 'em black again)

I know, I know...but one can hope.

Couple of questions on your super sweet machine:

Why Geil? Why not just buy it from OWC or another dealer who will guarantee that the memory works on a Mac? Besides, I have 4 different kinds of RAM in my G4, and it works fine; just made sure that it was certified to work on Macs.

The 9800 Pro at the Apple store adds $350 to the machine, while at OWC it's $371 to buy separately. What's the strategy?

You know that currently the 107D isn't supported without a hack, right? However, it's a step towards future-proofing, so I gotta give it the ol'

it cost me $45 to add the 9600 to the G5. if i sell it for $175 (what they go for on ebay) i'll essentially be paying $200 for the 9800 pro retail. I may actually wait for the 9800 Pro SE since it has an ADC connector.

I mentioned Geil because I've gotten -really- good performance out of their stuff consistently on PCs, and the blue heat spreaders look cool.

The LaCie driver for the 107D works as good as any OEM driver, from what I've read on xlr8yourmac.

it's all somewhat of an experiment to push slightly beyond the bounds of what you can buy OEM from apple.

If you mix brands, make sure all the specs are the same. CAS latency, etc (not all PC3200 RAM is equal!). Some manufacturers aren't forthcoming with very detailed specs, so it can save you some effort and possibly troubleshooting later just to buy all the same brand. Personally, I buy all my RAM from mushkin, and have been since the mid '90s.

You know, I ordered a Dual 2.0GHz G5 (see sig), but there is a problem. I'm just not happy. In fact, I'm guilty.

No matter what I throw at the damn thing, it's just TOO fast

Congrats. I only hope you too can suffer from my "dilemma"

I'm basically running your machine -- DP1.8, Radeon 9800, but 1.5GB RAM and a combo drive -- and it kicks ass. You will NOT be disappointed. It creams my 3.06 P4 / 9700 Pro in Photoshop and with 10.3.3 even in Halo
Be happy.

Yeah, good point. You may be on to something! Sounds like a great machine, I hope to pick up a G5 for myself in a few months.
