Hi all,
I went to install a stick of 512 pc 133 sdram into the inlaws (badly needing ram) imac 500 os/x2.8.0. It has a stick of 128 already in it, it would not recognize the new stick. Are there limitations to how much bigger the 2nd stick can be? Any ideas what might be wrong?
Thanks.

The smallest stick should go in the first dimm slot and the biggest in the second.
You shouldn't have a problem with that size memory. The problem could be that it is PC133. I know PC133 is supposed to be backwards compatible but I have seen where a system that is PC100 would not recognize a PC133 chip. Also, what are the specs of the module?
Try just installing the 512MB chip only and see if it is recognized.

Not sure which module you are asking about?
The one I bought is a pc133 512MB/16ch, the one in the imac i am not sure about and can not check at the moment since i am back home now.
And which slot would be the first one? i assume it's the one that has a module in it already.
Are you suggesting i should get a pc100 instead of a pc133?

You should see where it says DIMM 1 and DIMM 2 (or 0 and 1) beside each of the memory slots. It's always better to have the fastest/largest amount of RAM in the second slot. Leave the 128MB module in the slot that it occupies.
Do you know the speed and voltage of the 512MB module? It should be 3.3V and the speed is measured in nano-seconds. It should be something like 8 NS. If the voltage or speed is off, it might not work.
Myself, I always try to play it safe when it comes to RAM. If the system specs say PC100 I try to get PC100. Unless I get a guarantee that the faster RAM (in this case PC133) works with my system. The iMac won't take advantage of PC133. If it recognizes the RAM it will still work as PC100. If this doesn't make sense please let me know. I can try to explain it better.

That model won't take PC133 ram, I just went through the same hassle with a 450 DV.
Must be strictly PC100
Here's the apple specs link
Swapping the slots won't make a difference....it's always something, eh?

Please keep in mind the ambiguously selective general understandings we've all agreed upon...

Well I returned the module with a 15% restocking fee
funny because on Crucials site and an Apple vendor I went too they offer up pc133 for the imac 500. Apple vendor of course offers 256 at 10$ more than I paid for 512, again
I guess I'll try and find a pc100 module somewhere without a restocking fee.
