Hi guys,

I'm going to shoot this question off to Applecare for the second time but I'm hoping somebody here can shed some light on this.

I'm a new Mac user and I just bought a new G5 dual 1.8 with a GB of ram. Its only been about 3 weeks since the thing was first plugged in and its FROZEN solid 5 times! Just crashed with the color wheel spinning... apple + ctrl + esc doesnt do anything.

After the first 3 times, I called Applecare and they suggested it might be a hardware conflict. I had a USB hub plugged into the Mac with a printer and scanner plugged into the hub. Upon their recommendation, I unplugged the hub. Now I only have the keyboard, monitor, and some speakers plugged in the Mac but its still freezing.

I'm not running heavy applications here. Usually, I'm doing something super simple, like throwing something in the trash. In fact, its crashed twice when putting things in the trash. Is this a known issue or is this random?

Is there anything I can do for this? Is it possible the OS is corrupt already?

thanks for any advice

What apps did you have open? Same all times?
Were you uploading anything that failed?
Connected to any shares/network devices that might have stopped responding?

2 times, I didn't have anything open. I was just dragging some files to the trash. When the trash icon 'expanded', it crashed.

1 time I had Mail open and it just crashed. I wasn't even doing anything like sending or composing a message.

Another time, I was browsing with Safari. No other applications open.

Last night was the kicker: I was working in Illustrator CS on a project for a client and it crashed. No other apps open. Argh!

I have the 10.3.3 update installed. I have a home DSL connection, directly connected to a D-Link wireless router. I have a laptop wireless connected to the router but these two computers are not shared. The PC laptop always stays running without any sign of the Mac crash so I don't think its associated with the crash.

*on another note... I just posted this issue on the Apple forums and noticed there are several other posts for random freezing with G5s.

I don't have any advice, but if it makes you feel better, you're not the only one. This happens to me alll the time, but is always random. I might go for 3 weeks without a problem, and then have a week where I lock up 5 times. And like you said, it's never related to any intensive task, always something simple like hitting pause in iTunes, or clicking on a menu. And it happened to me the day I bought the G5, within an hour of taking it out of the box.

I've swapped my ram out 3 times, replaced the drive, reseated the vid card and fans. I need to just take it in to the Apple store at some point, but I just haven't had time.

Try popping the ram dimms and reseating them. Then run the 'hardware test' on your software restore DVD. You'll see the instructions in fine print on the label.

Pretty much sounds like the problem many others (me included) have been experiencing lately:

I've been having freezes ever since I upgraded my Dual 2Ghz g5 to 10.3.3.

Before that, I had a freeze maybe twice since Oct. Now I've had 5 in the last week.
