I wanted to repost this in a new thread in case no one checks the other one:

I went in under multiple users and I made myself the main user (my husband was the main user, but I just opened his profile-thingy up and changed the password and name). Then I turned on multiple users and rebooted the machine. Now I keep trying to log in with my password and it keeps saying it's the wrong password!! I've tried it umpteen times, even tried variations on the password (misspellings etc) and nothing. It wont let me log in! I tried rebooting with extensions off and it still requires a password and says the one I'm using is wrong. I even told my husband what I did and let him work on it because he's supposedly really good with computers (yeah right) and he can't get in either. I've turned the Mac into a big blue paperweight!! Help--is there any way to bypass it??

I'm at school right now since now I have no computer at home, but I'll only be here for an hour or so. If anyone is reading this and has any advice please post it ASAP! Please post it in step by step dummy instructions so I'll be able to follow. God I feel like such a dolt, jeez. I know I didn't ruin the whole computer by putting a password on it, right??

Waiting for your gracious help,
Maria

No, you didn't ruin the whole computer.

Whip out your trusty OS 9 install disk (or another disk that is bootable... such as a Norton Utilities disk or something) and put it in the CD drive... restart the computer holding the "C" key on the keyboard. It should start up off of the CD. From here you should be able to access the hard drive. It's been years since I've used OS 9 (and I never used password protect) but I would think that from here on out, it should be simply a matter of trashing preferences or moving the actual multiple users stuff. You're going to have to wait for somebody else's advice, there.

Oh man we don't have an OS 9 disk
My husband gets all his software after it "falls off a truck"
I don't think we have any discs that aren't either music or games or movies... we might have a printer disc but I know we don't have a Norton disk. Damn why couldn't he just be more honest then we wouldn't have this problem!

Anything else I could try? Thanks so much for your help!

What constitutes a bootable disk? Just thought I'd ask before I go home and see if we have any, hehe.

A bootable disk is any media with a "blessed folder" (aka System folder) in OS 9 you were able to burn a disk with a system folder on it so you could boot from it.

Reboot the computer. after you hear the chime, hold down Cammand S and you will boot into Single User Mode.

Once you see a prompt type password shortusername It will then ask you to enter a new password. type exit to continue to boot.

Remember people, this is OS 9 we're talking about so there isn't a single user mode. Other than that, I have no idea what to do, other than to see if your husband's account still works.
