Today software updater downloaded and installed the new Java update (1.4.2 I think but I am not sure) available but my ibook has died in a similar fashion to those that died because of the Java 1.4.1 update. Screen just went blank completely (no back light no nothing, tried hooking it up to another monitor...nothing!!!). Now sometimes it will boot sometimes it won't. Managed to do a hardware test on it and everything came out fine (but I am sceptical). Now it makes 'booting' sounds but the screen is completely dead. I can make it sleep by pressing the power button and then 's' so I know something is going on back there but that is it. On a couple of occassions it has looked like it was starting up and then the screen starts flashing grey and run lines down the screen. What should I do? (yes of course it is out of warranty...sob(apple is good like that)).

I am not sure about your problem, but it might get faster answers in the iBook forum. Just a little bit of advice.

I had the exact same problem you did !

I have an ibook 700 mhz g3

I would suggest that you do the following:

iBook and iBook (FireWire) computers

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Disconnect the AC power adapter.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Press the reset button located above the Power button at the base of the display. Use a small, blunt instrument such as a paper clip to press the button.
5. Wait 5 seconds.
6. Reconnect the AC power adapter.
7. Put the battery back in the computer.
8. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.
Note: Resetting the power manager also resets the date and time. After the reset, the system clock is set to 12:00 A.M., 01/01/1904.

iBook (Dual USB), iBook (Late 2001) and iBook (14.1 LCD)

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Disconnect the AC power adapter.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Press the reset button located above the Audio/Video port on the left side of the iBook (Dual USB) computer.
5. Wait 5 seconds.
6. Reconnect the AC power adapter.
7. Put the battery back in the computer.
8. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

Note: Resetting the power manager also resets the date and time. After the reset, the system clock is set to 12:00 A.M., 01/01/1904.

iBook (16 VRAM), and iBook (14.1 LCD 16 VRAM)

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing Shift-Control-Option-power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the power button to restart the iBook computer.

Note: Resetting the power manager also resets the date and time.
After the reset, the system clock is set to 12:00 A.M., 01/01/1904.

Once this is done and you have the battery back in, boot up pressing the following key combination:

Apple(command) + option + o + f

simultaneously while you power up the system

A command prompt will appear on the screen.
Enter in these commands with exactitude as failure to do so MAY CAUSE IRREPARABLE DAMAGE TO YOUR FIRMWARE AND/OR HARDWARE.

reset-nvram
<hit return>

reset-all
<hit return>

your system will now reboot, should your system fail to do this enter the following

mac-boot
<hit return>

Your system's default hardware/firmware settings have now been restored along with power management, system clock, (and) NVRAM. If this does not solve the problem I suggest that you see your local apple authorized service center as there is a high probability that this is a hardware issue.

Apple has a motherboard replacement program going on for G3 iBooks. Even if you are out of warranty apple may choose to replace or refurbish your system. This is a known problem on these systems. More information is available at http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/
The steps that I have recommended you take will have helped to verify that the problems you are experiencing are related to hardware. In this case, as the document supplied suggests apple will most likely repair your system.

ALSO: WILL ONE OF YOU MODS MOVE THIS THREAD ALREADY!?
