Once this is done and you have the battery back in, boot up pressing the following key combination:
Apple(command) + option + o + f
simultaneously while you power up the system
A command prompt will appear on the screen.
Enter in these commands with exactitude as failure to do so MAY CAUSE IRREPARABLE DAMAGE TO YOUR FIRMWARE AND/OR HARDWARE.
reset-nvram
<hit return>
reset-all
<hit return>
your system will now reboot, should your system fail to do this enter the following
mac-boot
<hit return>
Your system's default hardware/firmware settings have now been restored along with power management, system clock, (and) NVRAM. If this does not solve the problem I suggest that you see your local apple authorized service center as there is a high probability that this is a hardware issue.
Apple has a motherboard replacement program going on for G3 iBooks. Even if you are out of warranty apple may choose to replace or refurbish your system. This is a known problem on these systems. More information is available at
http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/
The steps that I have recommended you take will have helped to verify that the problems you are experiencing are related to hardware. In this case, as the document supplied suggests apple will most likely repair your system.
