I have a G-4, 1.0 ghz, dual processor, 1.25 gb ram, running 10.3.3 and am unable to burn dvds from idvd, or copy music cd's using Toast titanimum 5.2.

The problem is I made an iMovie, tried to create a dvd and then burnt the dvd. After trying to make a 1.4 gb iMovie on iDVD with 15 minutes left I get the following messages:

"The recording device reported the hardware error: Logical unit communication time-out (0X08, 0x01.)"

the other message was:

"The recording device reported the hardware error #6: Power on, reset, or bus device reset occurred (0X29, 0X00.)"

I tried several different ways to burn in Idvd, and made about 5 coasters. Nothing works. I repaired disk permissions several times as well.

Also, when I try copying a music cd from my superdrive to my cd drive I get an error message and the cd becomes a coaster.

I thought maybe my iMovie was corrupted, so I copied my imovie file to a fire wire external hard drive, and then tried making a dvd on my friend's g4 powerbook with a superdrive. No problems, I burnt all my movies successfully. So the problem seems to lie somewhere in my superdrive. I can burn cd's using the Mac proprietary cd program, but don't like to use that for music cds.

Any suggestions to save me hundreds of dollars in tech and repair costs if I have to take the computer in for repair? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

Power your machine down and check all the cables going to and from the DVD burner to make sure they are secure.

I don't think re-installing OS X will help since these don't seem to be random errors.

I'll go out on a limb and say your DVD burner is on it's death bead.

Fear not though, you can get the Pioneer DVR-107 from NegEgg.com for $120. It is twice as fast as the one you've got and fully supported under OS X.

I will give that a try, but doesn't sound very good. Is there any diagnostic program that can be used to tell me if the dvd burner is dead or not. Good to hear that I can replace so cheaply.
