I've got the Dual 1.8 G5. I'm thinking about getting a second drive. Should I get one of the same type? It has the 160 GB SATA, although I don't know what brand or model it is yet.

You don't have to get the same type, ie brand, model, size. But, it does have to be a SATA drive. If you're going to use it for certain uses, it may help to have it the same size or model. For example if your going to use it as a backup drive for the first drive or if your going to RAID the two drives.

I know they used Seagate at one point, but I'm not sure if they use different ones or not.

The sweetest SATA drive right now is Maxtor's 300GB / 16MB buffer drive. Super quiet, excellent performance, 5 year manuf. warranty. Get it from newegg.com.

I have four of these drives in a MacGurus enclosure. which is underneath my desk alongside my G5, which has two Hitachi 400 GB drives in it.
I never hear the hard drives. I hear the fans of the G5 now and then, but I don't hear the drives.
Initially, when I turn on the MacGurus tower before turning on the G5 (usually this is all on, but when I'm gone for a couple of days, I turn it all off), I hear the drives spin up with my ear about 1 foot away from the enclosure, but then nothing. They're simply quiet.
Enough details for you? Sorry I don't have tech-specs. Hope this helped.

Check out http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...359&depa=1 and http://www.storagereview.com to complete your due diligence on this product. Even barefeats.com checked out this drive and concluded that it was superior to the Raptor (!) as a boot disk.
For ATA drives, I continue to be very happy with the whisper-quiet, very reliable performance of Western Digital Caviar drives (the 200 GB versions) which are loaded up in my dual 1.42 G4. But in the SATA realm, where I obviously need to be with my G5, these Maxtor's kick some booty.
I tend to be a cheerleader for products that I use in a mission critical situation and find myself very happy with. Though I've only had these drives for a week, I've been putting them through serious paces almost nonstop because of deadlines I'm facing here at the end of the year. So far Sonnet's 4+4 external SATA card, MacGurus enclosure (which may have something to do with insulating me from the sound of the drives), and the Maxtors have made me a very happy video editor.

As an aside, I just have to say that Apple's really onto something with this whole plug-and-play concept. The way everything just works from the G5 to OSX to FCP and Motion and DVDSP... period. After all these years my enthusiasm for this fruity OS/hardware platform that has made so much possible for me is probably at an all-time high.
I cannot wait to see what Apple has in store for us in 2005.
