I was just getting a B&W ( 550mh G4,9GB-SCSI-OS9.1, 2-40GB uATA-OS10.2.8) together. All was booting & running well off the master uATA HD until I tried to boot off the second (slave) uATA which had been in my beigeG3 AIO. The master HD had OSX installed in the B&W while the slave had OSX 10.2.8 installed while it was in the beige AIO.

Now the B&W will not boot ie:
1) no start up chime or any POST warning beeps
2) nothing showing on monitor
3) Power lights are on; HDs & CD, spin up and motherboard diodes #7&8 are both on equally. USB fingerboard power switch functions.
4) motherboard diodes #1(ATA), 4 & 5 (USB) do not flicker or light
5) motherboard diode #6 is on solid indicating ultra ATA activity?
6) motherboard diode #8 is on solid indicating a hung CPU bus.
7) all voltages from the power supply are normal.
Is this a fried motherboard or was something screwed up with the NewWorld firmware scheme by the beige HD?

Is there anyway out of this? I have tried PRAM battery removal, CUDA button, boot from Jaguar CD (will not boot). Boot from OS9 CD (will not boot). Switching (including slave & master settings) HDs. Will not boot from any one HD ATA or SCSI. Switched RAM every which a way. Everything I have tried produces same result, no start up chime.

Some early B&W motherboards had an IDE controller that did not fully support a 2nd drive on the bus. Try disconnecting the 2nd HD and booting again. I'm guessing that the IDE controller is getting hung on having two drives present.

Next item, you are running a CPU upgrade board, which may have required additional drivers. Do you have the original CPU still? If so, and removing a drive doesn't restore functional booting, swap the original CPU back in and get everything stable again before you tackle the extra HDs.

Some 3rd party USB peripherals can make a system unstable, especially if the OS requires a driver for them - which might not be present on the drive from the Beige. Unplug 3rd party USB peripherals if needed, see if it boots. Also, got any 3rd party PCI cards present?

If it's still unstable, strip the system down to stock configuration, get it stable, then add extra stuff back one at a time, making sure it's stable each step of the way.

(I'm Jmars's son, it's actually my blue & white) #1 It doesn't require an "upgrade card" we aren't using an "upgrade card" we're using a ZIF processor I know it's something with the motherboard, theres no startup chime even with the harddrives and DVD burner unplugged. It's not the PCI because theres no chime with the PCI's out. Changing processors doesn't make a differece (i.e. won't boot with the original 450 G3 or the 550 G4) so it has to be something with the motherboard. Any ideas ? I'm so desperate that I'm using Windows 98 on the IBM right now.

Have you tried resetting the PRAM, resetting the CUDA, reseating the RAM?

Sounds like a rev.1 B&W problem. The rev.1 units had several issues that were fixed in rev.2. XLR8 Your Mac has a special section just for the B&W models with lots of reports and how to tell which revision you have. They also cover the secondary drive issue as it is quite common.

We did have a revision 2 motherboard. DOesn't matter anymore though, because we got a new rev. 2 motherboard and the B&W is running fine.

Can I have the old motherboard?
