My mother has a G4 tower - blue/grey, 400Mhz, 384MB, 4 PCI (only) slots. She's thinking about buying an iBook and if she does I may buy this tower off her. I have some PCI cards and I was wondering if I'd be able to use them in this machine (currently with OS X 10.2). I have two SCSI cards by LSI: the LSIU160 and the 20860, an ATi All-in-Wonder VE (PCI), and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. I'm sure I'd have to give these cards new firmware, which I'm fine with, but if anyone can give advice or point me the right way I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks!

Did you take those cards from another Mac? If so they will probably work fine (firmware, driver update issues aside). If the cards are from a PC and I think the latter two may be they may not work. Check out xlr8yourmac for compatibility info. Hope that helps.

The U160 and the Santa Cruz are currently running in my PC. I've used an All-in-Wonder VE (PCI) in my PC before, but it and the legacy SCSI card are currently boxed. The makers have no Mac drivers for these cards. xlr8yourmac doesn't list any of them, so this may be a first time project. It would be sweet to find drivers and firmware out there.

If they're taken from a PC forget it, ain't worth your time. In particular the SCSI controller won't work since it needs a special Mac Firmware to work in a Mac.
But, and this I wanna point out, the other cards won't work either The rule is: No firmware, no go.

pretty and well preserved piece, but to skid across the line broadside,
thoroughly used up, worn out, leaking oil, shouting GERONIMO!"

So they need new firmwares then. Fair enough. Just another hurdle...

I just transplanted my ATI TV wonder VE from a Linux Box to a G4 today. I used this app to get the TV card working (sort of). My card uses a Phillips NTSC tuner, and yours probably does too, so you might be able to get it to work.

The program is a little rough around the edges. You have to scan through the frequencies yourself and set up what all the channels are. And since ATI isn't in the list of cards, you have to pick a random other one to get sound working. (speaking of sound, if you don't have a mac that can take a sound input, you may need to get your own speakers or a USB sound input).

I haven't looked into video capture, but my gut instinct is that it will be more trouble than it is worth to set up. But I can use the card to look at live cable.

edit: That all-in-wonder has a VGA card on it, too, right? That app I mentioned only applies to the TV portion of it, of course, but there are Mac drivers for ATI cards, so the VGA port might work, too...

Sweet info! Thanks very much. That card does have a VGA on it, a Radeon 7500 GPU, and there is a Radeon 7500 Mac Edition...
