I have an iMac 400DV that I use for file serving (well did) and now it won't recognize the network. I have tried different wires, different ports, even a straight connect to the cable modem. I have messed around with network settings in OS 9 and X 10.1 it's crazy and I tried a clean installs too.

I am now convenced that the card is blown or something. I checked all the little pins in the port on the computer and made sure they were not pressed down as well.

Is there anything I can do besides getting an airport card and base station? I have seen USB ethernet cards, I think that would do the trick but all the ones I find have no Mac support.

Could someone suggest a USB ethernet card that would work or know of way to replace the standard card? Maybe there is a third option I am missing besides the airport setup.

It is a stock iMac 400 DV with 512MB of RAM and I have either Mac OS 9.2 or Mac OS 10.1 for it. It connects to a linksys dsl/cable router.

Thank you.

My ethernet (on the same model) crapped out too - I've had to resort to Airport as there simply aren't any compatible USB solutions.

hmm, let's do what the others are doing....

I wonder if we can organize a class action law suite.

Apparently this is a common problem with iMacs, which is a pitty but it didn't affect me much as I was going to install Airport anyway.
