Anybody have any luck with this? It's a realy good drive, better than the Pioneer Superdive and about $100 cheaper. Hoping someone can give me stories of this working out, thanks

Dunno about that particular drive in terms of support from iTunes and iDVD etc. directly, but I'm guessing the DVD-RAM should work in OS X, and the rest should work with Toast.

It's both (and supports +R/W too).
LG GSA-4081B
For versatility, look to the LG Super-Multi Drive. The GSA-4081B records data up to 4.7GB per side on DVD media and writes in all kinds of formats: DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, DVD-RAM and CD-R/-RW.

I am aware. But it is not a DVD-RAM drive. It is a +/-RW that also supports the DVD-RAM format.

Huh? If it supports DVD-RAM (both reads and writes BTW), how is it not a DVD-RAM drive? LG is historically quite a big maker of DVD-RAM drives, too, and were so before they started making +RW drives.
LG bills it as a "Super Multi-DVD" drive. That means DVD+/-RW + DVD-RAM, and the older term " DVD Multi" is an official DVD Forum term meaning DVD-R/W + DVD-RAM (among other things).

If you're gonna call that drive a DVD-RAM drive because it supports the DVD-RAM format, than you had might as well just call it a CD-RW drive.
Most drives are defined by the 'primary' format that they support.

And that would be "Super Multi-DVD", which is DVD-R/W, DVD+R/W, and DVD-RAM. Those are the 3 primary format classes it supports, as defined by LG itself.
Remember, LG supported DVD-RAM (including in combination with DVD-R/W, aka "DVD Multi"), before it supported DVD+R/W, so by your argument one could just as easily say that it is a DVD-R/-RW/-RAM drive which happens to support DVD+R/W.
Anyways, your first post here was that it was a DVD-RW drive, and that it was not a DVD-RAM drive, which makes no sense whatsoever, especially in the context of this thread.

I'm not sure you are understanding my point. But then again, I don't understand yours either.
Must be because I am not as smart as you...

FWIW, my CD-RW and my DVD burner were not supported in the Finder initially, but after a few updates to OS X (a few months later) they were supported. I just used Toast. (DVD-RAM should be supported right off the bat, but YMMV.)

Just on a side note, you asked about another possible burner. I hjust purchased a Lite-On 8x (i believe it's the 8118B) from newegg for 103.00 shipped, applied Patchburn 2 (you can get that from xlr8), and it now works like a champ from every app i've tried (finder, iTunes, and DVD Studio Pro). I haven't tried iDVD yet, but I would more than recommend this burner to you. I installed it in the 2nd bay of my MDD, but I don't see why you'd have any problems installing it in your G5 once the front part of the tray is removed (as the case in all apple machines). Hope this helps somewhat.
