It's a snap. Put an airport card in it, set up a wireless network in the system prefs, and you're golden. Takes about 2 minutes to put the card in, and 5 or 6 mouse clicks to set up the wireless network. (internet sharing tab in network prefs pane).

That is true, but a wireless router costs less than the Airport card for the G4. And it uses less power than the G4. And gives you more settings than the G4.

Using OS 9.2.2 and airport software, you can declare the g4 as an "airport base station". This allows the g4 to share the internet with a laptop. I do not know if OS X has a similar setup. sam

Os 10.3? If so, System Prefs>Sharing>Internet tab. select Airport, click Airport options... button. Name your network, and give it a password.
Go System Prefs> Network> Airport tab turn on "Show airport Status in Menubar" checkbox. Turn on internet sharing.
If you're on, there will be an arrow pointing up in the airport menubar icon.
Turn this on on the laptop as well, and your network that you just made on the tower should show up there in a pull-down menu. Select it, and you'll get a little checkmark by it. You will get a password promt, if you elected to password-protect your network, which you should. (I have two neighbors with unprotected wireless networks, I found out, when I got my laptop)
Hopefully, that's it, and you're online.

You are FAR better off with a wireless router. Just buy one, they only cost like 20-30 bucks. You will get better range and security and have much more flexibility and reliability. Software basestations are finicky and require the base computer to be on all the time (and NEVER sleeping).

Blech, bad advice. You can get a wireless router for $30. If you use your powermac the antenna is not as strong and you have to leave it on all the time.

He said he already HAD an airport card in the tower, so I was attempting to tell him how to do it for ZERO more dollars, you buffoon.
Some day, you're going to need help with something I know about, but I won't much care.

Still not worth it. Better to sell the card and buy two damn routers with it.
The towers antenna's suck and who wants to leave it on all the time.
