Reports of the death of the G5 have been greatly exaggerated...

Some people are natural complainers. They live for it. It validates them..

The world has enough backseat drivers. Does he really think that Those few points that are not completely done to death are not being talked about and worked on by people a lot smarter than most of us? And are in a position to do something about it other than complain on a blog?

My screwed up dual 2 gig G5 with dual 20" LCDs has been SUCH a burden on me since i purchased it last OCt.. cough. NOT.

I've been more productive then i have ever been with a computer.

Someone needs to come up with a warning label for posters and bloggers...

Warning:

More backseat driving ahead. Without any knowledge of apple's inside workings, I am going to compain anyway and tell the world how I think apple should be run...

The old axiom still stands: Those who complain about speed and specs of machines the most, probably need them the least....

I recommend another disclaimer for folks like you:

"Warning:

Apple Zealot ahead. Any discussion regarding Apple will be immediately picked apart and reduced to semantics. Please leave all logic at the door."

Shareholders in Apple have every right to worry. With Sony coming out with their iPod killer, Apple can not sit on their laurels. They need to revamp their computer line.

Theres alot to be said for Apple innovating with the iPod and little to be said for Sony/Dell.. whoever immitating. Its been the same for a loooonnnggg time now. Apple innovates, others immitate with cheaper versions (cheaper in quality, components and overall price).

Am I a zealot? Yes but I am also very correct, guess I forgot to leave my logic at the door.

I think you're both right -- Apple innovates, but it would be great if they would also fully exploit their innovations. Look what the Walkman did for Sony -- Apple should not relinquish their Walkman-like potential in the iPod. Of course, Apple itself was built through the exploitation of technology developed elsewhere (at Xerox).

Beaujolais Nouveau used to be the junk that the French would throw out until someone realized that they could sell it to Americans. DRM liscencing by Apple could be their beaujolais nouveau (a conduit for wider success via the iPod). Hope they don't throw it out.

I have a suggestion to boost current G5 sales: cut the prices.

You are correct. Sony came up with the Walkman portable music player and Apple imitated it and brought it into the MP3 arena. Oh I'm sorry that's not what you said.

DRM
Sony's "iPod Killer" is ultimately a networked minidisc player.
Nzzzt. Lame. It doesn't play MP3 files, it doesn't play WMA
files or AAC files. It only plays Sony's proprietary Atrac
compressed files, or so the information I've been provided says.
How is this going to kill the iPod? The minidisc format never
caught on in the United States and only in Japan did it really
excel. This will be big in Japan but not the u.s. People don't
want to cart around plastic discs - they want one unit they can
hold in their pocket.

Re: that G5 blogsite. It was difficult to wade thru it all but
my opinion on the issues is this: (1) the one half of holdouts
who haven't bought one are waiting for the promised 3 ghz. The
other half are those holding out for a rev B G5 tower. Nothing
more, nothing less. That's it.

It will be another round of Rev. A's, based on rumored changes to the box.

I purchased a Dual 2.0 G5 in mid-March. I actually think mine is a Rev. B without the speedbump. Absolutely no problems with audio, fans, heat, etc. Booting from a SCSI RAID! This thing is fast & quiet!

Glad I didn't wait any longer!
Cheers,

Just say "NO" to PLASTIC SPEAKERS!!

Actually, I've seen single G5s in stores with 8 ram slots. Is that a running change or more flukes?

This is very real, at least for me.

Quoting from the blog:

"there are a number of people who don't want to buy 1st gen Apple hardware anymore, and Apple hasn't given them a revision to buy into."

and while this was good strategy: "They didn't want people thinking about the G5 as being at 2GHz, but on it's way to 3GHz. That it had momentum."

but this has become true, yet again: "...3GHz G5. But here's the thing: people are already expecting them to announce it at 2004's WWDC, but actually ship it several months later."

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Apple has never been overly concerned with market share. People who appreciate quality buy Macs. If it's too rich for your blood, Walmart sells POS PCs. Go for it!

There was nothing "zealous" in his post ... simply highlighted how satisfied he was with his G5 (as am I -- absolutely *no* problems with mine -- the 2x2Ghz G5s are unparalleled by anything at a similar price, any platform, for speed and functionality). He then made the reasonable point that many people spend too much time chasing "specs" instead of worrying about whether the machine *actually* performs well.

BTW: I love the expression "reduced to semantics". Semantics is the meaning of language, and logic *is*, in fact, semantics. Thus it's logically impossible to "reduce to semantics" AND "leave logic at the door".
