I am currently thinking of getting a new G4 ibook for school, but with the recent upgrade of the emacs I am rethinking that idea and considering a new eMac (which is a heck of a deal at education pricing). I'm studying documentary filmmaking and already have FCP that I have been using on a loaner tibook 400.

The big knock I've heard about the eMac is that the displays have been problematic. To be honest I have seen some eMacs with beautiful screens and some that were pretty horrible.

Any thoughts?

My eMac display is beautiful. Even nicer with the second display next to it! It offers better bang for buck and the superdrive is really handy. On the other hand, having something portable is godsend for certain things. My advice would be to wait and see what the updated ibooks bring to the table.

The first 1G Combo monitor Apple shipped me was dreadful, brown & blue vertical lines down each side. To their credit they replaced it immediately with a new machine but the problem is still there albeit to a lesser degree. Put it down to dodgy manufacturing standards. I decided to live with it and at 1280x960 isn't that noticable but http://discussions.info.apple.com/we...He.0@.2cd7f944
The eMac is a great machine with a very bright albeit cheap monitor. If you really need exacting colour/video standards then perhaps the forthcoming iMac may be worth a look.

But my eMac advice is buy in person and have the store pull one out of the box and fire it up before plonking down the moulah.
