I'm wondering if PM 1.5's are around the corner, since 1.5G G4 Powerbooks are out now.

I don't need a G5 (nor can I afford one).

No. If you remember, Apple had dual 1.42 GHz G4s out before the G5 came out and then dumped them for the older single and dual 1.25 G4s. There are two reasons for this. First, Apple doesn't want the G4 competing with and G5 sales. Add a dual 1.5 G4 GHz or even a single and people will start to question the value of a single 1.6 GHz G5 (hell, they do already). Second, Apple sells the 1.25s to give those who need OS 9 booting an option.

The G5 will be the only chip available in the powermac line. You will never see a new PowerMac with a G4 chip in it. And eventually, the rest of the consumer and portable line will have the G5 as well.

I know, but if the low-end G5s are bumped up in a few months, I think a dual 1.5 G4 would be a fitting end to the G4 PM line. Like was said, G4s in desktops are on their way out.

A G4 dual tower is s bad solution for several reasons. A typical customer is the gaming mac user and as such with many games ported from PCs and no SMP the G4 and its slow bus is to little to late.

Secondly for Apple to buy pairs of G4s it is throwing money on a dead end CPU on a company that has no interest in desktop/server CPUs. Every IBM 970 that Apple buys is a investment in a CPU line that is intended for desktop/servers as well as a company that has a genuine intrerest in computers

I doubt you'll see any improvements to the PowerMac G4. I believe speed improvements would require a new motherboard revision as it's a set of resistors on the motherboard that set the bus/cpu multiplier. Corect me if I'm wrong. I think that's the main reason they haven't upped the speed on the PowerMac G4. They're just reusing the last motherboard version that supported MacOS 9. Why do a motherboard revision when the volume is so small on this product.

If you want a cheap tower, pick up the one of the current G5s when the new G5s arrive or get a refurbed G5. It's time to say farewell to the PowerMac G4, unless you need MacOS 9 bootability.

I doubt a 1.5GHz G4 chip costs any less than the 1.6GHz G5. Chances are, a new Power Mac G4 model would cost more than the low-end G5, yet be appreciably less powerful.

While Apple won't release another G4 PowerMac, I'm sure the upgrade companies will have a 1.5ghz product out, once thet can get enough of these chips not bound for the new Powerbooks.

I'll probably get a G4 upgrade for my Cube here soon, and do something with it. It's such a nice desktop system, would be nicer if it felt as fast as my Powerbook.

Uh, if you want something lower-end than a G5, get an iMac or an eMac?
