I just got a Superdrive installed and now software update asks me if I want to install the Superdrive update. On Apple's superdrive update page it says that you should contact the manufacturer for third party drives, but that seems like a hassle.
Do anyone here know if the superdrive update is needed for a brand new superdrive 107?

I installed the Pioneer Drive 107 in my G4 MDD 867 and it did not ask me for an update....

you shouldn't need one.... i think it's only for some 2x and 4x....

http://www.apple.com/hardware/superdrive/

From the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What DVD-R media is compatible with my SuperDrive-equipped system?
All SuperDrive-equipped Macs are compatible with 1x and 2x DVD-R media; this update relates only to high-speed media (8x/4x DVD-R and 4/x2X DVD-RW).

I suggest you go ahead with it, if it downloads and runs and your machine doesn't need it, the software won't apply it...

((I just ran it and it wouldn't apply itself to my DVR-103 and quit w/o touching the system...firmware updates check the drive for id before applying)) ... you are potentially a candidate.

good luck

Thanks for the replies! I went ahead and tried to install the update, and when it launched the installed updater app, it said I didn't need it.
I thought it was best to be careful though, since it seemed that the update could harm the drive if something went wrong..
