Okay so I finally gave in this am and bought myself a new IMAC 17". My old one was on its deathbed.
So, I've been installing all my software programs and it's been really slow when I have to restart or when I open a newly installed program (it seems to pause on the reading fonts part in the program, or the rainbow ball keeps turning as it's restarting).
I'm wondering if i installed my fonts in the wrong area, I dropped them in the System folder>fonts. Or if it's fontbook, which I've never used before. I'm used to Suitcase.
If anyone can offer me any advice, I'd appreciate it. Thanks alot.

System Folder/Fonts is one place you don't want to put fonts in OS X. That's where OS 9 keeps its fonts. Although they're supposed to work in OS X, you really want to put them where OS X expect them--in one of two places:

1) /Library/Fonts/ where they will be available to all users of the machine, or

2) ~/Library/Fonts/ where they will only be available to that particular user. The ~ represents your home directory. So this location is in your own personal library. That's why they are only available to you.

Thanks Chris. I moved them to the font folder in the library.
But of course it couldn't be that easy...haha and I had to call Apple Support after it continusly took atleast 15 mins to restart. Turns out I had to reinstall the whole Operating System as well as all other programs I've been spending all day installing!! AGH
So, it seems I have a long night in front of me.

Why not just open fontbook and drag n drop them into it? Isnt this the easiest way?

Can I do that? I was just about to reinstall my fonts from my old computer. I'm not familiar with FontBook at all, so I wasn't really sure how it worked.

Just drag the fonts in FontBook and it should install them for you in the right place. Not sure about that 15 minute startup time though unless some of the fonts are corrupt..

I believe the default setting for Font Book is to install fonts for the current user only. Font Book is indeed very easy. In fact I had forgotten that this is the easiest solution. But do go into Font Book preferences and set it to install fonts for all users of the computer, if that is your desire.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I went ahead and put them in Fontbook, and it does seem really easy. I think a bunch of them were corrupt which is why I was having previous probs.
Thanks!

so i have another question/problem. i posted in the software area but have not heard anything, so hopefully someone here can help me again.
i ended up loading all the fonts into the library>fonts folder after fontbook continuously crashed on me or took forever to open ( i loaded a lot of fonts).
so i decided to use suitcase which is what i used on my old computer and did not have any problems, and plus i like to group my fonts and activate certain ones specifically.
so, now evertime i try to activate a font in suitcase it gives me an error message saying the font is already in the system folder, so remove it then restart. and they are not in the system folder.
so i don't know what to do. if anyone can help, please let me know. this has been so frustrating. thanks.
