I've had my G5 for probably 3 months now, and 'have been using my Viewsonic G790 monitor since day one. It worked great on my PC, and did not see any sense in spending the money on a "Mac" monitor.

I did however immediately notice that the color of the monitor, now connected to the G5, was pretty "washed out". A dark blue was not-so-dark, especially when looking at the Splash page of my website - on a PC its was a nice dark blue, on my Mac, it was a blah medium blue - big difference.

I asked a couple of my Mac-user-friends, and they basically thought it was the Viewsonic, and I had to just deal with it. So I have been. Until....

A few days ago I actually shut my computer down and let it cool off for the night (which I rarely do). I fired it back up in the morning and begin to work, when I notice that all-of-the-sudden the color is FANTASTIC - rich/vibrant...however you want to describe it, it was 10x better than before. Nothing has changed - no cables moved/connected/disconnected. The machine was just shut down, and turned back on the a.m.

The only thing I could figure was that an updated driver was automatically installed, but could not be activated until a reboot.

I restarted my computer tonight for a different reason, and now I'm back to the "washed out" color! What the hell!??

I'm about to shut it down again, check all the connections and hope that the BRIGHT SOLID colors return.

Any ideas why this is happening?

It could be a funk up with the video card OR your monitor's profile. Check system preferences -> displays and click the color tab, if anything try a few of the display profiles or click the calibrate button to make one of your own

Hope that helps.

Thanks - I'll try that. You have no idea how thrilled I was that the color was suddenly great, like a Mac should be....and then it all went South. I'll try your suggestions and see what happens. Thanks.

Link: I set my own calibration profile and I believe that is it! Without a way of directly comparing the before and after, it IS still drastically better than before! Thanks!

Now why on earth would the color suddenly be good all-of-the-sudden after a reboot, then be bad again after a reboot? This has the 5200 video card - 'some of them known to be bad?

Thanks again.

It could have simply been the monitor profile mucked up and the computer gave it a default one.

As for the dodgy video cards, nvidia cards have a tendancy to be cooky. I wouldn't be THAT surprised
