Hello,

I am a new refugee from the dark side. I have had my Mac G5 for 3 days now (love it). I was hoping there is an inexpensive database program available (filemanager seems a little steep in price for me).

On my PC, I was using the old Windows program, Sidekick, and it worked great for me. Does anyone know of a similar program out there?

Thanks.

not exactly mac simple but the price is right. There are even package's of it for OS X to make the process simpler.

This thread more properly belongs in the software forum.

mysql is a database server for backend work.

My first guess is that Gary Willson is looking for a database application. AppleWorks comes with a decent database module, but AppleWorks is not free. Open Office unfortunately does not include the database module from StarOffice because of license issues.

FileMaker does offer a demo download, but the demo is time-limited (30 days) rather than feature limited.

Someone should have built a GUI database application by now that uses mysql for the backend, but I have not heard of anything like that. If your database needs are very specific (ie - sales records, product activation keys, etc), there are some free database applications. But no general-use free database applications that I know of.

I've been using FileMaker for about 12 years. Best database app I've seen. MySQL is also great, but takes more effort. I use it for the backend of my phpBB forums. My advice is to make the investment into FileMaker. I have an extra Filemaker 5.5 that I could sell you for cheap if you are interested, but version 7 looks pretty damn cool. Download the demo and check it out. Blows MSAccess away in my opinion.
