I have a 800Mhz FP iMac running Panther. Today it started running very slow. Everything crashing and programs not responding.

I decided to repair permission, but it gets stuck and doesn't respond.

Anyone have an idea of what could be wrong?

Thanks,

Try starting the system using the Panther disk and running disk utility from there. Sounds like a problem with the install.

At what point does it get stuck? There are some rare cases where the permissions on the DiskUtility app itself will go bad, and it can't repair itself. I believe there is an app available at VersionTracker.com that corrects this problem.

However, it sounds like you might have a bigger problem. Do you have DiskWarrior? You may have some serious directory problems, which only DiskWarrior could battle.
