I recently aquired a Blueberry iMac 350MHz with 640MB RAM for my nephew. I have to say that I am very impressed with it. I installed 10.1 just to see how it ran. It was sooo sloowww. I swapped out the 6GB hard drive with a WD 7200 RPM 40GB and installed Panther. After that this thing turned into an awesome machine. Don't get me wrong, it wouldn't be good for Photoshop or newer games. It only going to be used for surfing the net, writing papers, and messing around with iTunes.
No wonder people are not upgrading much right now. Panther gave older systems a new lease on life. Panther didn't seem to give my iBook 900 or iMac 1.25GHz much of a speed up but it did wonders for this little machine. I don't see Longhorn giving my P2 450MHz anything close to that.
I don't know if I'm going to let my nephew have this one now. I think I will give him my old PowerMac 6500

Yes, Panther on old iMacs is very useable for things like typing, surfing the web, etc. None of those power consuming programs.

That still depends on how much RAM you have on your iMac.
I use Painter and Macromedia Studio MX in Panther and I am very satisfied. The only slow down I ever see is due to the 10 GB hard drive inside.
Of course, Internet Mac explains it all.

I'm giving my next year's roomie a G3 333Mhz to work with (well it'll be on his desk I'm never giving away my first Mac.)
Anyway, I am planning on buying Office so I'll throw a copy on that too, and we'll see how he likes it But I anticipate he wont' have any quams.

Meanie. An old Power Mac 6500 will be painful for most usage.

I didn't have the heart to do that to him. I went ahead and gave him the iMac. I still have the 6500 though. It runs OS 9 fairly well but for some reason surfing the net even with cable is not very enjoyable. Very slow page loads. I don't need it but I really hate to part with it. Maybe it's time to do some modifications.
