Either I have a mouse inside my G5 doing laps on his favorite exercise wheel at 10,000 RPMs, or one of the numerous fans inside the machine is squeaking at an incredibly annoying rate.

Sound familiar to anyone? Its a light squeak squeak squeak - but loud enough to make me want to hurt the mouse inside.

It does not do it all the time either...I took the side panel off to attempt to get a better look, but I did not discover anything.

My G5 was new in December.

Thank you.

Do a search of this forum and the Apple G5 support forum and you'll find that this has been a topic of discussion for a long time. Most people refer to it as a "chirp." I have it as well, intermittently. Best guess is that it has something to do with the power supply, but no one has found a permanent fix. Some believe it's normal and is only noticed now because the G5 has such quiet fans.

One fix is to install the CHUD developer tool, then go to System Preferences > Power and turn off "Nap." Apple doesn't recommend this but hasn't explained why. You have to reset it any time you reboot.

I did a search, and didn't come up with anything - 'guess I should have looked further - I don't read this forum unless I need to (no time) so I usually am not up on common problems.

Thanks for the info

Ok, searching for "chirp" resulted in many previous threads about the subject - but the ironic thing is that most of the threads I found after searching for "chirp" were threads telling that person to do a search because this topic has been beat to death!!

Not complaining though...I'll get the CHUD whatever and fix it that way.

Thanks.

I got it also. It kicked in after Apple replaced the logic board in my G5. The chirping is really annoying now, what do I do? What is this problem??? Should I go to apple and see my Mac Genius?

Ah yes, this must be due to... redundant validation lockout! Because the validator chip on the power supply is malfunctioning, the redundant controller on the g5's motherboard isn't controlling the power supply, and the manual controller might be leading to excessive noise.

Wait.. this is that chirping noise not the whining noise. Putting a piece of aluminum foil between the motherboard and processor should fix it...

NOT! The CHUD program should fix this. Essentially it's because the processor makes chirping sounds when adjusting the speed.
Aloha
