Given that it'll be shipping (or imminently shipping) by the time the new G5s are ready, I'm practically expecting the top-end video option to be an X800 XT.

I was expecting the top end option to be the Radeon X800 Pro (256 MB) instead of the XT, but whatever the case, I'd be surprised if Apple didn't ship one of these as the top end option. (I don't expect the GeForce 6800 to be an option, partially because of power considerations.)

I also wonder if other brands and models will be offered, for the non-gamer 3D types.

..a dual 2.6-3.0 ghz G5 w/ the card will be amazing !

..they tested it on a 3.2ghz Pentium and the card was still too fast for the cpu

I thought Apple was pushing for PCI-Xpress cards since they're on the commitee and it is speculated the next G5s will use that technology. It lists these as 8x AGPs. Food for thought.

Either Apple has another trump card or they couldn't get their way.

It's a great card for sure. However, I wouldn't spend $700 on a video card unless I won the powerball jackpot.

Where do you see that the XT800 will cost $700?
It will cost around $400 and will be a BTO option. It most certainly will not be the stock video card in the high end G5.

I agree, don't expect Apple to make this standard in the TOL PowerMac, even though they should.

they should make the ATI 9600 standard in all models, then offer the X800Pro ($300) and X800XT ($400) as upgrades

The 9600 should be standard on the low end model and the X800 standard the mid. However, the TOL model should come standard with the best video card (X800Opro or Nvidia 6800). A $3000 computer shouldn't come with a crappy consumer video card.

While we are on the subject, did ATI ever release the 9800 Mac Pro (Not sure of the exact name), the card with 256 megs and ADC connector? I bought an G5 1.8x2 the day they came out,and it has the sucky Nvidia card. I'm getting ready to get a new 20 inch monitor and I would like to drop in a better viedo card. I'm not going to get the Apple 20inch if I cant get a card with an ADC connector.

Thanks

No, they haven't released it. It is total vaporware as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not so sure about that. Remember, WWDC is for what developers will have to code for - not necessarily what they'll code on. Announcing iMacs there would let developers know that the G5 is no longer just the high-end processor, and that even home-oriented apps should be optimized for the chip.

We don't even have a 256MB Radeon, what makes you think we'll ever get an X800?

Because Apple will make money selling it as a BTO.

I understand the entire BTO thing. What about all those people that bough a G5 and would like an upgrade the video card? I bought my G5 at a retail outlet so there were no options available to me, and I accepted that when I made the purchase. The only upgrade path for me is the ATI card with out the ADC connector. I want to pick up a nice 20-inch monitor. Wouldn’t it be nice if I could buy a Video card that I could plug Apple's monitors into? I'm going to buy a card, the only question is what monitor am I going to buy. I know I can buy an adaptor, but I'm not ready to through down a bunch of cash and the buy an adaptor. Maybe it’s just me. Apple should sell these cards. They already have them. We all paid a lot of money for our machines so spending some extra cash for a video card is not out of the question. Everyone knows Apple wants our money.

/tinfoil hat ON

I wonder if the Radeon 9800 Mac Special Edition was never released by ATI by request of Apple. Maybe Apple didn't want a retail card available that was more powerful than the top of the line BTO card.
Why, I have no idea. But, the card was supposed to be out by end of February, and even the most recent ATI Radeon Mac driver updates have the "Radeon 9800 Mac Special Edition" listed in the 'supported cards' section.

Should the card ever come out, I might actually buy it (assuming, of course, ATI doesn't charge us $500 for it!)

It'll be $299 for the PC version, $799 for the Mac version with half the RAM, and the PCI Radeon 7000 will go up to $1099.
