I am changing from a Beige to a B&W and it is unstable. I have upgraded to a G4@ 550MHz, have 896mb of ram, a rev 2 mobo, and two Maxtor HDs, a 40gig and a 20gig. I have OS 9 on the 20 gig and have been trying to install Panther on the 40 gig. I say trying I have installed it at least 6 times only to have the installation or 3.3 update hang up and invalidate the whole OS file. I am currently running Jaguar before trying the Panther update. Today I have had two kernel panics (the gray screen) and so many Safari crashes that I have lost count.
I have swapped the mobo eventhough I think both are OK and both are rev 2s. I think I am getting data corruption but I though this was fixed with the rev 2 mobo. My son is using a B&W with the same specs and his runs Panther rock solid. Does anyone have any clue as to why this one is so unstable?

It could pretty easily be the processor running at a higher speed than it can handle. When I overclock my Dual 1.40 to Dual 1.47, I experience similar problems, especially the constant Safari crashes.
If the CPU has switches on it, you might want to look in the manual for the switch chart and set it back to 500MHz to see if that helps.
If that doesn't do the trick, try running through your RAM modules with one DIMM in the machine at a time. It is possible that one of them could be going bad. OS X is a lot more picky about RAM than OS 9 was, which might explain why you only experience problems in OS X if RAM is indeed your problem.

I have just removed two RAM modules to see if that makes a difference. The G4 is rated at 550 MHz. I have run it at 600 and it doesnt seem any more or less stable than at 550 so I am tending to eliminate that as the problem. I see if the RAM makes a difference.

I second the thought that it might be bad ram. The exact same thing happened to me. Removed one bad ram chip and the computer has been running like a champ.

I've had loads of problems with bad ram on my Rev. A B&W G3, as well. The funny thing is that the ram would work on PC's with no noticable problems, but the B&W puked on it. (I still returned it to the vendor, anyway, since I bought it off their "B&W G3" page...)
I think that maybe Apple was playing a little fast and loose with the SDRAM spec back then: we know that the IDE controller on the Rev. A was hosed, so I think it plausible that the memory controller was hosed too, but only with memory that just marginally met the spec...

I had been running 3 PC100 256mb modules in my beige for months with no problems, after removing one of them that just looked a but different from the B&W it has been stable as a horsebarn. I guess the B&W is a bit more memory picky than the beige was. I have just finished installing Panther and fully updating it with nary a panic; Safari hasn't crashed in almost a day. Thanks guys, I've been chasing this problem for two weeks. Now take a look in the periferials forum for my Ultra wide SCSI question and see if you can help me out there
