If the 15inch had a superdrive in it (or an option) I would buy it... right NOW.
I love the super bright screen and just the look.
I find the 17inch screen not to be as bright and the outside of it looks not as appealing to me. It has too much plastic.
The 20inch to me is nicer than the 17inch, but impractical to me.
I just think people go crazy with the size of monitors and I think bigger isn't always better.
I feel strongly that Apple should keep the 15inch for years to come. I get the feeling that the new update will lose this size and 17inch will be the smallest choice.
I like the widescreen look on the powerbooks, but I don't like it on the imac 17inch or 20inch for some reason.
I'm sure I'm one of the only people, but I think the 15inch iMac just looks better. The screen isn't too big which is perfect to move it all around. It just looks right at that size.
Anyone else prefer this size and shape to the other choices?

That's essentially how the imac was designed... to accomodate a 15" 4:3 screen.
IMHO they should have just moved it to a high res ~16" widescreen and not bothered with several screen sizes, but instead focus on bumping up the specs of the machine.
The 15"'s size is nice.. but the screen quality isn't all that cracked up I'd say..

For my money, I feel that the 15inch LCD they use on the iMac is the best screen they make.
I feel the 17inch, 20inch, and even the 23inch don't seem as bright. I think it has to do with their lack of updating. It also has to do with the way the imac is designed, that the screen is at the perfect place.
When you are sitting you can look into the imac screen eye to eye, but with other LCD or notebooks, you are usualy looking more down which I think make the screens look worse to the human eye.
Whatever it is, I wish the notebooks had screens that bright.

I edited a feature length mini-DV movie using FCP 3 on an ibook 12inch. It wasn't fun, but 15inch seems like heaven.
But I understand that you would want the biggest screen possible for video editing, but my point was I just felt that the 15inch imac is the ideal form of that particular machine and I'd like to see it with all the bells and whistles.

The 15" is a nice size, I just wish it had more pixels some time. 1280x1024 would be a nice upgrage for it. Other than that, I love my iMac.
If you really want one, the early 15" models came with a SuperDrive, and I think even the 1Ghz models had them as options. Or buy a new one and slap a SD in.

The iBook and 15" iMac have the same screen resolution.
IMO, the 17" is potentially the best machine overall, but unfortunately they charge too much for it. In fact, I think they charge too much for the 15" too.

I have a 17" iMac and love it. The 15" seems really yuk to use after you get accustomed to the 17". I love the widescreen format of the 17" too. I can't imagine trying to do video editing on anything smaller. The 17" seems to be a good fit for most timeline GUI software like FCP and Garageband.
I agree that Apple should keep it around and try to reduce it's price to under AU$2000. Lots of people like my 17" but cant afford one for themselves.
There is too much price gap between the top eMac and the 15" iMac.
Either way, I think we'll see an iMac upgrade to G5 before long.

It's the 15" I have, and I love it. However, I do wish I could have bigger resolutions, but it's not a big problem. I don't do any video editing so I don't have any need for a big monitor, it would just be nice

15" is fine. 20" would look to lanky on the iMac.

What I would have loved to see is a 15" with a slightly thinner 1280x1024 screen, 8x superdrive, and a 1.5ghz g5 processor under the hood
That'd make for one damn worthwhile machine.

In some ways I agree.
My friend has a 20" for his Powermac, but on the iMac it looks silly. Even the 17"-wide iMac looks odd.
The 15" is nice, but just not enough real estate.
I don't know why no one has suggested or though that the current 1280x1024 studio display will be on the new standard/low end iMac. Makes sense to me.

I had a 15" iMac on my desk at the office and it was perfect. At the office, I didn't use applications that had lots of pallettes or required opening multiple windows. For that kind of stuff I prefer a much larger screen. I think Apple should keep a 15" model around though as it's fine for most and is available at a better price. $999 would help sell a million of them.

Why not use the LCD in the 15" Powerbook in the iMac. The resolution isn't spectacular but far better then 1024 x 768, or am I the only one who thinks this is a good idea?

that's a great idea. i'm surprised i didn't think of that since i used to own Rev B and Rev C tibooks. knowing that a higher res 16:9 ratio LCD (wide-format like the 17" and 20" models) certainly makes this thread valid and interesting.

Widescreen rocks! Great idea. I'll second that motion :-)
