Panaflo fans seem to offer the best cooling/noise ratio
http://www.materiel.be/refroid/120mmfans_2/page24.php
Apple use Delta cheap and lots of nosie

The B&W is not the most difficult mac tower to cool so many quiet fans will do
Apple use the odd 2 pin connector while everybode else is using a 3 pin connector. However a a 2 pin and 3 pin plug can be mated the two pind on the motherboard goes into two of the holes in the plug and the third hole that use the pin for the rpm signal is left unused.

many thanks, my SGI has also a Panaflo, so there is no problem about the 2 and 3 pins thing, right?

Another recommendation for Panaflo.

You could also just buy a fan that uses a standard 4-pin connection and piggy back it on the power cable going to the optical drive.

Panaflo fans are great, but if you're thinking about replacing the 120mm (the very big one) in your tower.. be aware that they can be no more than 25mm deep or they will obstruct the airflow.

What I suggest is what has been suggested before A 120mm evercool fan.. to be exact, thanks to the dude from this article, that fan he mentions :smirk:

I'm sure he'll post here soon enough to agree with me (or himself) heheh.
Aloha

Interesting link, Link

About using foam, the internal hd, well, my Yosemite has two, but the WD 80 GB 8 MB cache is noisy. I placed some foam between the HD case and the hard disk, mainly where the screws are located, but there is again too much noise. Would be useful to place foam like the one on the link?, any other advice to reduce the noise level?

Thanks.

If you can, you'll want to pop the side panels off and stick insulation in.. yeah that won't hurt

Make sure you don't accidentally cover any vents in doing so. As for putting a pice of foam over the HDs, I'm not a big fan of that but whatever.

The big suggestion would be to swap out those WDs with seagates I (totally by chance) ended up with that kinda swap ages ago and I can't hear my g4's HD unless I concentrate to hear it

So true, Seagates seems to be the more friendly HD to the 'I hate noise' user.

Agreed.

I am a big Seagate guy. I have used Seagates in all of the PCs I've built in the past few years. And I am using two 160GB Serial ATA Seagates in my Power Mac, and they are quite silent. They get a little rackety during heavy use, but for the most part I never hear a peep out of them.

Noise under work (read date, write data) is not the WD problem, the noise it just do all the time is the issue. Yes, I had several Seagates in the past and they worked flawless and silent.
