I have a dual G4/1000 QuickSilver and I am getting this error when I'm running hardware test cd. Mac doesn't want to start in os X at all, even from CD (forbidden icon), it will install and start from os 9 but it gives me error: "The build-in processor test detected a problem with one of the processor. Please contact service"
What is that and how can I fix this. I don't haave a second dual CPU card lying around to test it. I have a dual CPU Mirrod Door Mac (dual 1GHz) but it has a diferent motherboard layout and a different heatsink. I'm not sure if the pinout for the CPU card is the same.
Any input before taking to Apple Service Center?
Thanks,
Derek

Backup, backup, backup. Don't trust anyone but yourself with your data.

I don't care about data. I have mirored drives and over 30 Macs at work to hook up those drives to if I need the info from 2 internal 120 GB drives. My projects are on 2 external Firewire drives. I have my data. I need a working Mac at home. My iBook is not enough for Final Cut.

yeah. unfoutunatly you don't "fix" this - you are getting two errors telling you that the processor card is f'ed. If it is still under warranty, don't mess with it, just take it in with the two errors written down and taped to the unit. If it is just out of warranty, the first thing to do is check your credit card - some automatically extend your warranty - especially cards like amex.
If it is still out of warranty, you are looking at buying a new processor module. At that point it may be cheaper to ebay the thing "as-is" and buy something else.

Thanks everyone for the repiles.
No warranty no more. I didn't buy on credit card. I was thinking af=bout the worst: buying a new Mac. I have also iBook 700MHz, but it's 2 years old and I am thinking between 15" Powerbook and G5/1.8 Dual. I didn't plan to buy a new Mac now because I have a house to buy. Oh, well, it's called Life.

You might be able to have your cake and eat it, too: there might be a dual-processor CPU upgrade card available for that model. Upgrade cards typically cost less than a replacement CPU module from Apple, and you get a speed increase out of it.

I would buy the dual CPU card from OWC but how can I be sure, that the motherboard is OK? What if I buy the dual CPU for $700 and the mobo has a problem and not the CPU?

The HW test is pretty specific (tho I have seen it miss obvious problems). If you are in the market for a proc upgrade then you'll be getting it anyhow. Here's what I recommend--
Send it in for repair (I assume you have Applecare). When it comes back good, get the proc upgrade and then sell the stock proc on ebay, here, whatever.
