I know the slots are PCI-X, but I assume regular PCI cards will work, correct? I am looking for a combo USB2/FW400 PCI card to put in there since I have a USB2 powered scanner, KB/Mouse, Sony Clie and USB2 printer to connect, as well as an iPod dock, iPod mini dock and external FW400 hard drive.
Will any PCI card that is Mac compatible work okay on the G5?
Thanks.

I use a 4 port Adaptec USB 2.0 PCI card in my Dual G5 and it works just fine- no issues whatsoever.
I believe there is a voltage issue with older PCI cards.

Ah, the wonders of disinformation. Only certain older PCI cards are incompatible with PCI-X slots, as rhogue states. When in doubt, look at Apple's product page.

Thanks, guys.
I do hear of people saying some PCI cards won't allow their PowerMac to go into deep sleep. Is this the same as sleep? I usually put my G5 to sleep at night. Is this a roll of the dice or something?

That certainly can be the case. I remember using a SIIG ata controller that would not allow my G4 to enter sleep mode. This can come and go with updates to OS X.
This adaptec 4 port USB 2.0 card has yet to give me a problem with either macine however.
Try to buy from a brick and mortar with a good return policy should you run into any problems.

Thanks for the info. I'll try an Adaptec card from a B&M.

Older 5v PCI cards will not work with PCI-X. Almost every PCI card you're going to find on the market today - unless you buy some old card off eBay - is most likely going to be a 3.3v PCI card. A 3.3v PCI card is fully compatible with PCI-X and as long as the card's got OSX compatible drivers will work fine. The issues with sleep are due to drivers that don't currectly support power management functions, some cards that provide power to devices (Firewire) don't want to be put to sleep for whatever reason.

I have an ATI Rage 128 "Orion" card in my G5, and it won't wake from sleep. The monitors will sleep fine, however.
