Lately my G5 has not been shutting down properly. I command it to and it goes through quitting all the apps and goes to the desktop background where normally a little spinner would appear and then the computer would shut down, but it just stalls there prior to the spinner. I have to hold down the power button on my computer to turn it off.
So in an effort to fix this I did an archive and install of the OS this morning, but the problem did not go away. Any ideas?

What if you log out all users first and then shut down?

Huh. I was thinking that maybe the loginwindow was hanging, but I guess we can rule that out. I'm stumped. Where are the expurts?

See if this helps (it always worked for me with stalled shutdowns)
Launch System Preferences>Under System, click accounts>Then click the Startup items tab>see if there are any startup programs that weren't there before and click on them to select them and click the minus button the remove them.
Sometimes when you install software, a program component of the newly installed software would be placed in the startup items tab (like the Epson Scanner software) that causes shutdown to lag or stall and removing it would remedy the stalled shutdown.
