I installed a Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 in my G5. Every 7-10 Minutes this thing does a strange squeaking noise, while beeing completely silent during the rest of the time.
Is this normal or should I worry?

Do you have your hard drives set to sleep in the Energy Saver panel in System Preferences?

If you do, uncheck it.

Could just be the heads parking, but I would keep everything backed up just in case.

I would return it to the store and get it changed, if only just for your own peace of mind.

I just talked with tech support and they said, that I should do a S.M.A.R.T - test, if the drive passed it, the problem could be with the SATA controller. I did this test using TechTool and the drive passed. So, does anybody know how to check the SATA controller?

Not that it helps, but my dual 1-Ghz G4 MDD Powermac has a Deskstar that does the same thing, and has for a year and a half. I don't mind it so much, never had any problems with the drive.

Hi!

My samsung drive does that, too, from the moment I bought it about half a year ago, but not that often. A friend of mine said something about automatic recalibration or something like that, so I have never worried about it.

Modern drives do not need to recalibrate -- it's now done continuously as part of normal operation, so to speak: before, the drive had to occasionally recalibrate for thermal expansion (so the heads would know where the data is). Modern drives use embedded servo data, which means that it's permanently, or continuously, calibrated, so to speak.

Just to chime in that my IBM/Hitachi Deskstar does this too and has since the day I bought it last year. Didn't make me feel too good at first and I still don't like it, but the drive continues to perform according to spec.
