I have a Gigabit Ethernet G4 (Dual 500) that I've been happily using for quite a while. Recently, the power supply died and I replaced it. For some reason though, my Apple monitor will not display anything when I connect it to the ADC port. If I connect my crappy PC monitor to the VGA port, it works fine.
The Apple monitor is not the problem. If I hook it up through ADC to another G4, it displays with no problem. So I assume this means the video card, a ATI Rage 128 Pro, is the problem.
I have access to a NVidia GForce 2 MX and I stuck that in the Gigabit G4 and the same problem occurred. But I don't know if the fact that this is a 4x AGP card in a 2x AGP slot has anything to do with it.
Anyway, I want to fix this. Do I need to buy a new video card? If so, what's the best I can get that will work in this Mac? I still have 2 free PCI slots...
Thanks for the help!

Did you replace the supply with a genuine Apple one?
The Apple PS supplies extra power to the ADC connection on the card when using an Apple display... perhaps this could be related to your issues?

As a matter of fact, no it's not a genuine Apple power supply. I have 4 hard drives in my G4, which is probably part of the reason the original power supply died. I bought a PC power supply that had been rewired to work in a G4. It does work fine.
I know the monitor gets power through the ADC connection, and indeed, the lights on the front of the monitor come on as though it has power. It just never shows anything on the screen.
Oh well...

Check out xlr8yourmac.com. I seem to recall that G4s with ADC support have a separate 24V line coming from the power supply that PC units don't have.
You could work around the problem by attaching to your ADC port an ADC to DVI converter, then use the Apple DVI to ADC converter to re-adapt to the ADC display. This way, it'll be the external box supplying the power and not the Mac itself. Of course, this work around will cost about $125...

Oh, and if you choose to go the new video card route instead, I just replaced the original ATI Rage 128 card in my Gigabit Dual 500MHz with an ATI Radeon 8500 Mac Edition I found on eBay (modified with an aftermarket quieter heatsink fan). Works great.
