My plan is to buy an older G4 model and upgrade it. I'm looking at the old Sawtooth, Gigabit/Ethernet, Digital Audio, and Quicksilver models.

I'm wondering if the small increase in price for the DA and Quicksilver models is worth the 33MHz more of System Bus. I'm going to be doing mainly gaming, so would I see a difference in a 100MHz Bus vs. 133MHz Bus? Also, does anyone have any suggestions as to what model I should buy? I plan on upgrading with an OWC Mercury Extreme 1.5 GHz chip.

I switch back and forth between a 1.25 G4 with 167 MHz bus and ATI 9000 and a 1.2 GHz G4 with 100 MHz and ATI 8500 and cant tell the difference in speed. So paying extra for bus speed is pointless, if you get more RAM CDRW or a better graphcial card you might pay for that.

Price of a OWC 1.5 GHz G4 is 500 dollar
then you need a graphical card that is 160 dollar, then even if you are given a G4 tower for free you are close to the price of a eMac especially if it is in its original state say 64 MB RAM no CDRW and a 10 GB HD.

So unless you really need a tower for other reasons get an eMac or save up to a G5

If fps is your concern, then the greater the bus speed the better.

My advice would be to get at least a 133 mhz fsb mac and a used geforce4ti for strong gaming performance. A late 2003 MDD would be better still.

Or, as bartman suggested, get a used PC for gaming and a kvm switch.

iBooks are quite cheap these days. You can probably get BOTH an 800 MHz iBook G4 AND a gaming PC for about the cost of an upgraded PowerMac G4. Also, it's not a wise economic decision to buy an older PowerMac G4 with the sole purpose of upgrading it. It would be better to buy one and keep it mostly stock, then replace components as you go to make it more usable. But don't get a Mac for gaming.

Plus, consoles are cheap these days. $100-$150 for a machine that should run any game perfectly.

Exactly...guess I don't see the point of having a PC for gaming with these around on the cheap. But then, I guess I do only play Halo, Unreal, Tiger Woods, Ghost Recon and stuff like that.
