So we've all seen reports of 2.6GHz G5's supposedly coming tomorrow. What would the likely bus / multiplier situation be? Could it be a jump to 1.3GHz FSB w/ 2x multiplier? That seems like quite a leap.

3x 866MHz maybe?

2x 1040MHz?

I suppose a 2.6GHz G5 on a 866MHz bus outruns a 2GHz G5 on a 1GHz bus - but on all counts? Thoughts?

Apple will likely maintain the 2x multiplier, but the memory speed may not necessarily increase. At this point, we are all dealing with speculation anyhow, so we can't pin anything. But my guess is a continuation of the 2x with 400MHz DDR memory, just as the current batch of dual-2.0's memory falls short of the system bus.

I am thinking that Apple will continue on the 2:1 bus ratio for now. But they also may choose a slower ratio since memory speed is serverely lagging behind the bus speed on the latest processors and is creating a bottleneck.

The 970, I believe, supports as low as 6:1, and up to 2:1.

I really, really hope that with the new motherboards Apple will support insanely fast memory, even if the base systems do not ship with 400+ MHz RAM. For instance, I would love to be able to hit PriceWatch and pick up PC4000 RAM and notice a speed bump, but I severely doubt we'll see this.

It's a very tough call, since RAM at those speeds is rather expensive (perhaps prohibitively), and the heat that would be produced.... I don't have any idea.

Where did you get 1040x2?

I suspect 1.3 GHz. IBM has already said the 970FX hits 1.1+ GHz for the bus.

And yeah, the memory will probably be the bottleneck, at DDR400 dual channel.

I agree peder, it'd be awesome to see the g5's memory bus "unlocked" in such a way that it'd accept any speed of DDR 400 above and at the 400 rating

PC4000 DDR is not an accepted standard.

What I'd love to see (and I'm really not sure -- couldn't judge from the appleinsider picts) is a DDR2

PC3200 is the highest standard for DDR1 so Apple can't support higher then that.
I'd hope the machines stay with DDR1 and not move to DDR2 because of the higher latency of DDR2.

Well, DDR2-533 would be nice. However, it's friggin expensive, so I'd like to see Apple stay with DDR400 too. And they will.
