So my question is how you install a new graphics card in the emac and imac and if you can... Because it would be nice to have at least 64mb video in the emac and you cant configure it any other way.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it can't be done. The graphics chips are soldered onto the motherboard.

Unfortunately, that's Apple's way of saying buy an iMac. Many times in the past they've crippled the consumer line, often so it won't compete with the "Pro" line. If you want to upgrade the graphics card bad enough, you'll have to buy a G4 or G5 tower. Too bad.

No, the main reason is, that it is close to impossible to build a affordable compact desktop Mac that still is expandable in many ways.

How big would the iMac's base be if there were PCI expansion slots ?

Most people don't care about upgrading (except RAM), they buy a Mac, use it for a couple of years, and then buy a new one.

You could make a pretty small Mac with internal expansion, but doing it in the iMac's current shape would be very impractical. It would probably end up being a super-mini tower or a "pizza box" without an integrated display rather than a streamlined shape.

I don't think Apple will be abandoning the AIO shape this time around, either - if Think Secret is right (and they could well be), having a minimum of 20" for your discrete display lineup pretty much rules out making a cheap minitower.

Good thinking.
Haven't thought about that. But you are right.
Apple would not go for 20" as the consumer low-end display solution.

So much for my wildest dreams of a headless iMac...

True, being a Mac user all my life I seem to be on an upgrade cycle of 2 years. Recent upgrades have been...
