I just purchased a 20 inch iMac after having a 15-inch FP for over two years. My main reason for getting the 20-inch was the big display. I expected the new 20-incher to be as quiet as the 15-inch, but since the first time I switched it on it's fan has been running at full speed all the time! Is this normal? Is there some kind of software fix that I should use to correct the processor heat management. I noted one suggestion about updating the prebinding and zapping the PRAM, which I tried to no avail.

Take it to an apple store Genius (yeah, right). You might have a bad mobo or a loose thermalcouple internally.

As far as I'm aware, the iMacs don't have variable fan speed control. If it's noisy, you may have a bad fan or a bad hard drive. It's far more likely that the hard drive is making a high pitched whine than it is that the fan would be bad. This can be replaced under warranty.

The iMac G4 cooling fan certainly IS thermally controlled. In any event, take it to your local shop for a checkup.
