On May 8, 2004 the image on our 4 month old iMac monitor rapidly faded away and disappeared. We took it to CompUsa for the repair and a freakin' month later we got it back. The inverter and screen were replaced and the problem was solved.

I have two questions. Why did the inverter and screen fade out? And would we have gotten faster service if we took it to an Apple Store for repair? CompUsa kept on telling us they had to order parts and that their traveling Mac repairman would have to be called once the parts come in.

Very common problem on laptops, especially the Gateways and Dells we have here. Inverters are known to have high infant mortality rates because they convert low voltage to high voltage. The inverter drives the backlight for the LCD screen, without you can't see anything. The iMac will still work if you hooked it to an external display but the main screen is gone. A month? Woah, I'd definitely take it to an AppleStore. Heck if you still had the box Apple would repair it and get it back to you in less than a week. They'd even send out a box to put it in with a fed-ex mailer.

I find it odd that they had to replace the inverter AND the LCD. How long a repair takes depends on how many people were in line before you. Also, if there were only one technician and he/she went on vacation for a week, it very well could take a long while. The Apple Store is run by simple economics as well. If they get backed up, you will have to wait.

Ok, but why would this happen and has it been happening to other iMac owners?
