Say the choice is between:

- a stock 2.0 GHz with nVidia 5200 (64MB) available quickly,
or,
- a custom 2.0 GHz with ATI Radeon 9600 (128MB) available in 10 days
(BTO adds a lot of time at the Apple Store Australia)

Is it possible to later buy a better video card?

Apple doesn't seem to supply it separately. Are there other sources?

Youre lucky you get it in 10 days.
Over here in New Zealand I have to wait 3-6 weeks for my dual 1.8 with Radeon 9600XT.
I would wait the 10 days

I'm still torn on a laptop vs. desktop, but I tried to compare two dual 2GHz G5s:

I. Stock Dual 2GHz G5 + OWC "Radeon 256MB 9800 Pro"

II. CTO Dual 2GHz G5 w/Radeon 256MB 9800 XT

I'm not sure of OWC actually means "Pro" instead of "XT," but other than that the differences between the two systems are:

a) Option I costs $66 more than option II (Edu prices).

b) Option I ships now (or in-store pick-up), and the card ships in "5 days."

c) Option II ships in "2-3 weeks."

If I go the desktop route, I think I'll go with option I. Can the stock nVidia card be used in older AGP G4 towers?

Well I believe you can buy the video card through cdw or macmall. Not sure if the retail version is different, i.e., agp 4x vs apg 8x of the oem version.

I decided not to wait and picked up the 2.0 at a local apple store.

you better off asking those questions in your own thread instead of hijacking this one.

I'm sorry; I didn't mean to hijack the thread. I just thought that my situation was similar enough to the original post - stock G5 + retail ATI card - and I thought the difference between CTO/Stock configurations with the ATI cards would be of interest. If not, I apologize.

If you can wait, the 9600 XT at $50 is a MUCH better card.

The FX5200 is absolutely pokey when it comes to 3D games, etc.

You didn't tick me off, I was just passing on that if you want your questions answered you may get better response with your own thread, but I totally understand, it your questions are indeed similar. I just jumped the gun a little

Peace
