I have a B/W g3 that has developed an interesting problem. First, the ethernet was acting buggy, cutting out intermittantly etc. So I put an old ethernet card in closed the side panel, started up and everthing was frozen and not working well at all. Long story short, I found that all the built in interfaces worked, for the most part, when the panel was open, once it gets to about 15 degrees closed, everthing cuts out. I can't see anything getting pinched, and when I lay the machine on it's side with the door closed it still doesn't work. Where should I be looking for the loose/ bad connection and is this something I can tinker with or should I send it out to a shop?

I don't know what is causing your problem, but I have a similar one. If I hit my case very hard (accidentally bump it) the computer will lock up. Sometimes, the only fix is to open the door and reboot. Then, it will lock up again as I close the door. But as long as I VERY CAREFULLY close the door, everything is fine.

So you might try closing the door, but doing it very carefully not to jar whatever connection is loose.

If you ever figure out what's wrong, let me know please.

Thanks,
Kevin

Interesting problem. When the door is closed, the hard drive cable flexes, so if it is old and getting hard, it may have developed a cracked line. Try changing the cable temporarily as a diagnostic check.
Also reseat all the RAM chips, take them out, put them back in (properly!). Might try that for the Video card too, they will work loose over the years. The next step is more radical, buy a G5, give the B&W to a friend, and enjoy the speed rush!
Good Luck

Although the g5 would solve most of my problems in life, the higher financial powers would have me suffer with something that "works"
The logic board was the culprit.
