I have a new DP G5 1.8 with a upgrade to the ATI9600 on order (supposed to ship by today). My friend recently got the same machine but with the stock video card (5200?). He brought it over and we couldnt get it to work with my monitor. My monitor is a big old SuperMac that only supports 1024 x 768 @ 75Hz. The monitor has 5 BNC connectors on the back that are hooked to an apple monitor cable which is hooked to an apple->vga adapter. We couldnt figure out how to get it to work with his computer. This monitor works fine with my B&W G3 with an ATI 7000 PCI card (its detected at start up). Both computers are using the same os (panther).

Will i be able to use this monitor when I get my G5?

thanks!

I don't believe the 9600 will be any different from the 5200 in this respect. Check the adapter; many have DIP switches...

Given what you're buying relative to the price of a new 21" CRT monitor, I would suggest you upgrade regardless. Actually, since monitors are one of the few components that survive from one CPU upgrade to the next, you should probably splurge and consider a Cinema Display.

I can't believe you still have one of those monitors! I remember them well. They actually were pretty nice monitors.

Whether it will work or not on your G5 I have no clue but it wouldn't hurt to wait and see before buying another one. If it doesn't work though I'm with the previous poster. I would just buy another monitor rather than trying to retrofit things to use that one.

I got this monitor for free from my brother law about a year ago. It weighs about 70 pounds. Its worked fine hooked to the G3 as well as the iBook 700. It will be a while before i can get a new LCD. i'm already going to have to wait to get more RAM and a second SATA drive due to how much to computer cost.

Is there a way to change resolutiuons from the command line (terminal) like you can one Suns with Solaris (ifconfig or m64config)?

Oh I see what the problem is. You're looking for a VGA port on the video card. The Radeon 9600 and the Nvidia 5200 don't have a VGA port, only ADC and DVI. You'd have to hook up the BNC connectors to the VGA adapter you have and then use the DVI->VGA adapter that comes with the G5 to attach the VGA adapter to the video card. If you can find a DVI->BNC connector adapter it would reduce one adapter. Not sure if one exists. It should work, but who knows.

As for resolutions supported. They are:

Support for digital resolutions up to 1920 by 1200 pixels
Support for analog resolutions up to 1600 by 1200 pixels

According to Apple's site.

I have a three year old 21" mistubishi diamond scan that has both VGA and BNC inputs. I use the BNC since it give a far crisper picture and true color. I have a VGA to BNC cable (looks like a regular monitor cable with BNC's on the mend instead of the VGA plug for the monitor) and just hook it into the DVi to ADC adapter that came with the G5. Display is crisp and sharp. Actually looks better when hooked up to my PC with the annihilator II card it had. I plan on getting a 20" LCD when they go refurb whenever the new displays come out (in no hurry) to use as a second display.

I got my G5 (new dual 1.8 with ATI 9600) yesterday. It works great with my old blue and white LCD 15inch studio display. If i try to hook it to my SuperMac crt, it doesnt detect the monitor and puts it on a incorrect resolution (SuperMac only supports 1024 x 768 @ 75hz).
If i boot up with the lcd monitor and then select 1024 x 768 @ 75hz and then unplug the lcd and hook up the SuperMac, it works.

Maybe i just need a BNC to vga cable instead of my BNC to Mac to adapter (to set the sync) to vga to video card.
Really i just need to get a 17 or 20 inch lcd and ditch this monster crt.
