First I apologize for this thread.
The 'Question Apple' thread seems to have arisen from the Power Mac vs Alienware/Or other price/performance value thread. Because of the locking of that thread there's a small rebellion happening. After all that thread was mentioned on the MacNN front page.
Imagine the surprise to many of us open minded die-hard Mac users when we find a thread comparing the value of Macs compared to either pre-built or home built PCS only to find some Mac users acting like fanatics, dodging questions, snipping posts before responding, and generally posting falsehoods such as 'That 64 bit Athlon CPU is a consumer CPU, but that 32bit Xeon CPU is a workstations CPU' or 'The configuration of the G5 is fully workstation quality even if you match a PC with all the same parts except the CPU which has to be a Power PC CPU or nothing'.
To put it bluntly, Power Mac Dude asked me to prove I could build a Dual Xeon 3Ghz with all the same parts as the G5 for a grand less. I did so and and it could be built for even less. This was after I built a high spec Athlon 64 with parts that were better than that offered with the top G5, again for a grand less. That was ridiculed in the most immature fashion by Mac Muhajideen (I can see them chopping PCs in half in their terrorist websites already).
As a Mac and only Mac user it is shameful to see fellow Mac users acting like what can only be described as cultic behavior. The Mac is a tool. It is not a God or a religion. And the hardware isn't what makes a Mac, it's the OS ONLY. If Apple had chosen Intel, AMD or other a long time ago we would still have very powerful machines, most probably a little cheaper and the best OS.
So cut out that imbecilic attitude that Power PC CPUs equals Mac. It doesn't. Windows NT ran on Power PCs and Alphas, that didn't make it a Unix or Mac OS either.
At the end of the day we want the best performance at the best price to run our apps not our OS. Our OS should be able to run on poxy machines with low end specs. What we want is power and affordability to run Softimage, Maya, 3DS Max, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Avid, etc. You buy the hardware and use the OS that runs those apps the best. If you have to use Softimage you buy a great value high performance Dual Xeon like I config'd. When it comes to editing you can either continue working on that PC or export video in a compatible format to a Power Mac to work in Final Cut. I've yet to see a great video and graphics company that didn't mix machines and OSes.
