I'm looking at buying RAM for my existing iMac G3 500 MHz. Currently, it has 384 MB (one 128 and one 256). 512 MB on crucial.com is $116. So, I could go up to 768 for $116 or replace both existing slots and go 1 GB for $232. Which would you recommend? Would the performance benefits of moving up to 1 GB be worth double the cost?

About my usage: Safari, Mail, Office 2004, bittorrent, iPhoto, some light video editing with possibly buying a DVD-R drive for burning with Toast, lots of iTunes, some Garageband.

Thanks in advance for recommendations. Also, the alternative to this is looking to buy a new computer, depending whether G5 iMacs come out at WWDC. I'm debating trying to extend using the current machine or biting the bullet on a new one.

G5 iMacs won't come out at WWDC. Don't get your hopes up.

My recommendation: Buy one 512MB. If you are having pageouts, buy the other one too.

You don't have the slightest idea more than anyone else what will be at WWDC.

I know that people get their hopes up way too much at every single expo. I know that Apple has publicly stated that we should not get our hopes up on a PowerBook G5 or an iMac G5 this year. As far as I'm aware, Apple is also not doing a sattelite broadcast of the keynote this year, nor a webcast. That sounds to me like Apple has no plans on announcing anything big.

You will feel much better Monday evening if you expect nothing but Tiger at the WWDC. If you hope for an iMac G5 and it doesn't happen, you'll be dissappointed. I suspect Apple will demo Tiger, the speed bumped G5, Airport Express, and the new Displays (which is supposedly a shoe-in).
